California Rehearsal Dinner
Tim and Priscilla are setting the table for the dinner served in her Mother's lovely back yard in California. Larry, helping on the far left is my ex. Chapter 35: Travels with Cali
September 3--
Cali—I am really mad at Mommy. She got up early this morning and I thought we were going to play. She got out this suitcase looking thing and put me in it. It was cozy so I didn't mind too much at first, but then she started carrying it. I heard dogs barking and I didn't like that one bit! Then Frank put the case (with me in it!) in the back of his pick-up truck. Now I don't mind traveling, Mommy and me do it all the time. But this was windy and I couldn't move around. Then we stopped and Mommy picked me up and took me inside a building. Those two dogs that bark at me in the yard back at the RV were there and there were other barks, too. I knew I wasn't going to like this. After a little bit, Mommy went off and left me there! Strangers put me into a cage and I could hear dogs barking all around. I'm here all by myself and I don't know what is going on! Yep, poor Cali and Susan and Frank's two dogs got taken to
Shopping in Laguna Beach
One of the many lovely little shopping nooks in the town of Laguna Beach. the boarding place today. She sure didn't look very happy. We drove to Denver to catch a flight to San Diego. Tim's wedding is just three days away! It will be in Mexico, so this will be an exciting and interesting trip!
After we landed we went to a motel in Rancho Santa Margarita. There was a whole group of us, Larry, Bonnie, Susan, Frank and I. We relaxed a bit then Tim and Priscilla picked us up in a van and we drove to Priscilla's mother's house for dinner. This woman can cook! We enjoyed a meal at her house when Tim proposed to Priscilla on Cinco de Mayo. (Go back a few blog chapters.) We had a wonderful meal out in her back yard which is full of flowers, a gazebo and a beautiful fountain. We enjoyed seeing several of Priscilla's family members again.
September 4--Today we went to Laguna Beach and shopped and spent some time at the beach. The beach here is gorgeous. You can look back at the May blog and see some of the pictures I took. The shops are pretty high end, but Bonnie found a purse and shoe shop that
Engaged
Tim and his bride-to-be, Priscilla, snuggling on a park bench near the airport in San Diego. had some good deals. Both she and Susan found some cute shoes. None for me, though. People look at my size 5 foot, laugh and refer me to the children's department. It was a nostalgic time—the last day for us to spend time with Tim as a bachelor! Hard to believe. Here I am in California again at the second wedding of a grandchild within a month. Am I getting old?
Later we went to the airport in San Diego to pick up Julian and Rachel and then checked into a hotel in San Diego. Frank and Susan told stories about the time they lived in the area while he was in the Navy.
September 5
Today we go to Mexico! Tim and Priscilla have worked very hard to get everything coordinated for this event.. They had hoped to have a bus for everyone to travel together on, but it didn't work out. We wound up with several cars packed very full of people, luggage and wedding stuff and made a caravan down to Ensenada in Baja California. I had been once to Tiajuana on a day trip, but that is the only time I had been
Loading Up
We had six or seven cars in our "caravan" and every one of them was filled to the roof with people, luggage and wedding stuff! Supervisors from left to right are Julian, Bonnie, Rachel and Larry. to Mexico. I was looking forward to visiting again. It took us quite a while to get through customs. Now you have to have a passport to come and go. Once all the cars got through, we met up again at a gasoline stop similar to the truck stops in the States. There is a four-lane highway down to Ensenada which makes the trip very nice.
Along the way we saw the slums and barrios of Tiajuana, then some of the beautiful homes of the rich along the shoreline. The road winds along the Pacific with some wonderful views. Due to the caravan and the schedule I didn't get to stop every 15 minutes to take pictures, darn it!
We got to the hotel early in the afternoon and got unpacked etc. Again, there was a lot of coordination by Priscilla's father and his many friends. The hotel was lovely, but there was no elevator. Since our rooms were on the third floor we got a lot of exercise! In the hotel patio there was a hibiscus tree in full bloom. I have hibiscus bushes at home in Florida, but this was the first time I had seen
Condos in Mexico
We had a rest stop on the highway on the way to Ensenada and I took this picture of the condos on the hillside. They had an ocean view from up there. a tree! Yes, I got pictures!
After everyone rested a bit, we walked a few blocks downtown and went—what else?--shopping!Priscilla went with us, so we not only had a translator, but also a price negotiator. Our time was limited, however. We had to get back to he hotel to be ferried out to a place they called “The Ranch” for dinner and the wedding rehearsal. The Ranch is out in the country and is the mission that Priscilla's father is involved in. Among other things, they train young men to be preachers and/or missionaries. The driver of the car we rode in from San Diego was a student there. We found out our excellent driver was only 17!!!
The people at "The Ranch" fed us a huge rehearsal dinner of great, home cooked Mexican food. After that we adjourned to another building and rehearsed our roles for the wedding. I say "our" roles...I didn't have any responsibilities, so got to watch and take pics to my heart's content. After the rehearsal, the minister gave us a message about the sanctity of love and marriage. By that time we were ready to head back to the hotel and hit
Statue of Christ
This huge statue was up on a hill along the highway in Baja. the hay. It had been a long day and tomorrow is a big one!!!
