Given our late start out of Albuquerque, we decided to drive straight on through towards Dallas. We stopped once in Amarillo, TX to get some food and fill up on gas, eating at Dyer's BBQ. Award-winning and featured in our book the place was a real disappointment...Can ordered steak, which was quite delicious, but Katy's whole plate of ribs came out cold and was less than delicious..reminding us why Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY won best BBQ in the US.
*We took a route not often traveled by road-trippers, which meant we saw a whole lot of nothing except really small towns. The sun went down as we were driving, and given the flatness of the land...the site was unbelievable, and the best we had seen yet. Otherwise, we grew tired of the numerous Christian stations, listening to one about child discipline for about 20 minutes...which was humurous until we realized this was the one state where NPR, the National Public Radio Station that has been keeping us updated on world and local news, did not seem to be available on any station! About an hour outside of Wichita Falls at around 21:00, where we tentatively had decided to stay
the night, we saw lights flashing behind us...our first time...and hopefully the last pulled over. The officer told us we had been going about over the speed limit, that drops down during the night because of vision. Can was asked to get out of the car, and Katy asked to stay in...after an attempt to get out. We explained that it had been a long day of driving...and since we seemed harmless enough..after verifying our stories and checking why Can's English is so good despite him holding a German passport, we were let on our way with only a warning. We arrived in Wichita Falls not much later and after checking a few hotels right off the thruway, went into town and found a really cheap Inn to stay at. The town was a bit shady, but the hotel seemed well protected...as we were told by a slightly out of it Tennessee woman, who had been living there for about a week,.. " he has 911 on speed dial". She scored extra points for telling Katy she was pretty and calling us a cute couple, despite whatever she may have been on 😊. ha.
*We didnt want to stay
long in the place, checking out before the 11:00 time and making our way the two hours to Dallas. Upon arriving and visiting the Visitors Center, we discovered that in the two hours in the center of town the only things to really see are the place that JFK was shot and killed and the memorial...in a way that seemingly gave the place a profit upon his death. We took some photos at the X marking the spot of JFK's assassination, checked out the memorial, and then walked to Pioneer Square...four acres of 40 longhorn bronze bulls commemorating the cattle drive in early Dallas history.
* It was quite hot out, and we were pretty dehydrated...we walked through the old town in search of a restaurant for lunch, but settled on a couple bottles of water instead and then got on the road heading towards Shreveport, Louisiana where we were set to meet Katy's brother Kris, on a weekend trip from his new home and new job in Magnolia, AK. He had figured there would be more to do in that town, and as we had already had plans to visit him in Magnolia, this was a closer destination.
We arrived in Shreveport a couple hours later. Kris met us at the hotel he had booked for himself and us and took us into the neighboring town across the bridge by foot to get some food. We decided on Joe's Crab Shack overlooking the river connecting the towns. We waited an hour to be seated, sharing a bucket of beer to hold us over, and then sat down to a long feast of cracking crab legs. The whole process was exhausting and delicious. We walked a little bit through the quaint area before heading back towards the hotel, where Can rested and Katy and Kris went out for a quick drink before calling it a night.
