Formal Night!
This is Acacia and I at the captain's cocktail party San Francisco-bound! Happy Valentine's Day! The days at sea are as action-packed as the days in port if you partake of the various activities on the ship. There are groups that meet all over the ship to play trivia games, have afternoon tea, play card games, attend lectures, etc... We started out the day with a photography lecture which was quite good. There is a fellow on the ship who was a photographer for a local newspaper in New York for many years. He gives talks almost every day where he recounts his great stories from across the years. They are endless! Run-ins with the secret service, bribing guards to get a better vantage point from which to get a picture, pranks pulled in the office. Today's lecture was a little different as he wanted to just give some tips on how to take better pictures. He gave examples of where different lenses make more sense, the effect of various levels of flash, and shutter speeds. It was really interesting since he's quite skilled with both digital and film cameras so he was able to give some great tips on how to get the best results with your modern day digital
Jim and Joan
Jim and Joan at our dinner table. Happy Birthday, Joan! camera. After the lecture, we had a nice lunch in the formal dining room. Later that afternoon, I attended afternoon tea again while Acacia had a nap. The seas are really rough today and most people are feeling either a little sick or at least a little tired. Acacia fell into the tired category in the afternoon then I started feeling a little sick in the evening. We attended and got to participate in a version of the Newlywed game on the ship this afternoon. It was really fun and I'm sure quite humorous for the people watching. Any couples that wanted to participate put their names in a hat and three couples were chosen to come up on stage. The women waited outside while the men were asked questions such as when and where your first kiss was, etc. Then the women came back in and had to give teh same answer for the couple to earn a point. After all were through, we repeated but with the men waiting in the hall. Some of the responses and jokes made were hilarious. We ended up losing to another couple but had a blast. One of the questions to the
Champagne fountain
You can sort of see the Maitre'd of our dining room placing a glass on the stack women was "If another member of your family walked in on him naked just after a shower, what animal would they probably describe him as?" Just the question got some laughs, but the responses and reasoning behind them got pretty outrageous. There was a cocktail party for repeat passengers on Princess Cruise Lines in the evening. We aren't repeat customers, but Jim and Joan (our dinner companions) gave us their invitation then just pretended to have lost it so they could get in. There were complimentary drinks while the captain thanked everyone and gave out a few rewards. They announced who on the ship had been on the most cruises (the winning couple had been on around 140 cruises with the number of days totalling just under 4 years!) and gave out bottles of champagne to the winners. The feature entree of the evening was lobster tails so it's a safe assumption that we were happy. We all had multiple tais. I'm pretty sure I ate 4. Does that mean I was full and skipped on dessert? Not quite! They had a lemon souflee with orange creamy sauce. There were other items to pick from but I really don't remember what they were. It was Joan's birthday today (she's a Valentine's baby!) so we had a little champagne with dinner to celebrate. I believe it was her 45th or so (somewhere in there... :-). After dinner, there was a group renewal of vows which took place in the atrium of the ship. The cruise director read some nice passages and had everyone repeat the vows, after which there was a champagne fountain followed by the drinking of.... you guessed it.....more champagne! That was pretty much the theme of the evening: Excuses to drink champagne! We ended up sitting in the atrium sipping and eating some chocolates with Trevor and Christa (the very nice honeymooning couple from Canada which we met on the beach in Ixtapa the other day) before finally making it to bed at some extremely late hour. One more day at sea to relax, though the rocking ship is making it a little difficult...
