Left Glacier on the 9th of July and made the long drive to Gillette, WY. Had a very nice time staying with Mary and Luke and Thelma in Gillette on Thursday. On Friday the 10th, drove to the Battle site of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Watched a film about the battle and listened to a ranger talk, then walked up to Last Stand Hill. It was pretty cool, but I wish I would have had a little more time to walk around the site a little more. Left there and drove to Cody where I met up with Mom and Dad. We started to watch the gun fight in Cody, but left when it started to drag on. Went to the park and listened to a band for a while, then walked around the town for a bit. On Saturday the 11th, we drove to the our place at the Bill Cody Ranch, which was very nice, and then went on into Yellowstone Park. Pretty soon after we drove into the park, we saw our first bear. We saw 7 bears in all in Yellowstone including the two cubs that we saw. We also saw lots of elk, deer,
and buffalo, and one coyote. On the 11th, we drove to the Mud Volcano area and Norris. On Sunday the 12th, we drove to the geyser area. Saw Old Faithful go off, then Dad and I continued down a trail to see some of the other geysers in the area. We were lucky enough to see the Beehive, which errupts twice a day, go off, and we had to scoot out of the way when we starting to get drenched by the water coming down. As we continued walking, we saw another geyser errupt and sat down for a while to watch it. Saw a couple more bears as we were driving out of the park. Mom got out of the car and started walking around before we knew that there was a bear pretty close to us. A little ways up the rode another bear walked right in front of our car. On Monday the 11th, we drove to Grand Tetons National Park. Very impressive mountains and nice scenery. Took a walk around Jenny Lake, and got off the beaten path when we walked around Moose Lake. We didn't see any moose, but the scenery was very nice. Left
the Bill Cody Ranch on Tuesday the 14th, but stopped to watch the horses there for a while first. Drove to the Japanese internment camp a little ways past Cody, which was really interesting. After that we went to the Buffalo Bill Museum, which was really nice. Saw Buffalo Bill's boyhood home and found out that he was originally from LeClair, Iowa. Walked through a display about the Plains Indians and a gallery of paintings centered around western life and landscape. I walked into the natural history section where there was a display of photographs of a lot of the places that I had gone through over the last five weeks, which I thought was really cool. After that, we walked around town for a while and had a nice dinner to celebrat Mom's birthday. Tomorrow we're going to go on to Deadwood and start making our way back to Iowa.
