DAY 16 - Tuesday, July 12, 2016
Spearfish, SD to Devils Tower - Wyoming to Buffalo, WY
Just winging it. Before ever leaving Spokane, Geoff and I mapped out as many details about our trip as we could. But ever since Day 12 - when Spirit needed repairs - we’ve been “going with the flow” a bit as we head back west. It’s a good feeling to wake up and talk with God, “Okay, Boss, what do You have for us today?” Every day should have that simple focus - whether we’re on vacation or at home doing our “normal” daily jobs. This morning was relaxing and we scheduled horse rides in the afternoon somewhere around Devils Tower near Sundance, WY. It was an easy drive - distance wise - but boy can that wind blow! They have special gates that come down to close the freeway when the wind is too strong. We never saw them in use thank goodness! We made it to Diamond 7 Bar Horse Rides right at 1pm. But they missed writing in our 6 person appointment so after over an hour they had horses ready for us. Little did we know we were
about to get more than we bargained for! Horse rides in Washington state are walks on a specific trail - very easy going and mellow. We learned pretty quickly that Wyoming Trail Rides are very different! I’ll sum it up with Pearl cried off and on, I got bucked off my horse, Smoke, who didn't want to stop trotting, and I had to trade horses with our guide, AND our guides got lost - more than once (and bickered). Other than that it really was beautiful and most of our group had an awesome experience. Back in the RV I tried to make a teaching moment for my kids and I said, “See kids, now you have a real life visual of literally getting back on your horse.” They responded immediately, “But Mom, you got back on someone else’s horse!” BRUTAL! Who’s raised these hooligans anyway?…Oh right. 😊 On our way to Buffalo, WY we drove closer by Devils Tower (much easy to drive than horseback ride) - where they filmed the movie “Close Encounters” in 1978. We made it to Buffalo and hunkered down for the night, thanking God we were all alive without any broken bones. We figured
we were about 5 1/2 hours to Yellowstone - more driving to go tomorrow - we better rest while we can and ice those sore spots!
Speaking of movies here’s some of the movie/TV titles filmed at some of the places we’ve been on our trip: 1. Dances with Wolves 2. National Treasure II 3. North by Northwest 4. Little House on the Prairie 5. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 6. Buffalo Bill shows - like Annie Get Your Gun and Doris Day’s Calamity Jane 7. Close Encounters 8. Bridges Over Madison County 9. A River Runs Through It (we maybe weren’t exactly by this one but it sure looked like it!) and 10. Old Western shows like the Lone Ranger and John Wayne movies. The scenery has been gorgeous and inspiring!
