The drive out of Yellowstone to Cody was actually better than most of the drives within the park itself, it was just how we imagined USA to be like before we came here; tall red buttes over-shadowing the road giving you a feel of the old Wild West – we were driving towards the infamous town of Buffalo Bill Cody after all – time to don the cowboy hat again – ye ha!!
We were glad to be couch-surfing again, this time with the Pollock family – Robin (who was away with work), Jim and their youngest daughter Jordan. We arrived late at night and they were very welcoming. We took a much needed shower to wash away the campfire smell and after a brief chat we both retired to an amazingly comfortable bed for a god nights kip…ahhh warmth!!
The next day we took a look around the old town where the original cowboys had built the town, saw the legendary Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy ‘s ‘Hole in the Wall’ hideout that has been re-assembled here, along with other original saloons and stores from the old west; it was all pretty good to see. After buying tickets for the

It was quite hard to get the scenery as Mary was driving like a maniac
Rodeo we returned to the house to cook Jim and Jordan Shepherds Pie with Yorkshire Puddings…mmm. We met two more couchsurfers – Ursula (Germany) and Jeremie (France).

After tea it was Rodeo time. Our 2nd rodeo but first in America and we were looking forward to it; Jordan came with us as she had bought a season pass, so we managed to get in the back entrance and escape the queues. It was very different from the Aussie one; firstly it was in a stadium that you had to sit down in and couldn’t really walk around, a couple of the events were different and the crowd were not as enthusiastic as they had been in Oz!! Never the less me and Mares still had a great time and got into the full swing of things. They had a compare, dressed as a clown who was pretty funny. 2 hrs of action packed Rodeo and we returned to the house and got a good night’s kip before our journey to South Dakota.

On route was Devils Tower, so we camped the night in Keyhole State Park and as we were driving there, we were in a storm, however

It looked like the end of the earth here...wierd....but then we drove through a tunnel to the other side of the mountain
luckily enough, as soon as we stopped to camp the rain cleared and the night was still.

It was only a short stop at Devils Tower, a quick read into the history of the area (it was very a great land marker for the Indians who called it ‘Bear Lodge’). We had a mile or so walk around the circumference taking in the great views and then we were on our way to South Dakota.
