M -After an unsuccessful evening whale watching whilst enjoying a very tranquil sunset off Lime Kiln Point to the west of the island looking for Orcas we decided to stump up the money and take a whale watching trip. I seem to be the kiss of death to these trips but given that Orcas inhabit and pass through this area I assumed we were on to a sure thing.
2 hours into the trip all we had seen was a porpoise but the flotilla of boats on the horizon was promising. Sure enough, as we arrived at the group we were rewarded with a water spout from a Humpback Whale. The whale then breached the surface and did a number of shallow dives for the assembled masses giving us a few tail shots none of which I was fortunate enough to capture on film. But it definitely wasn’t a bird on a log! As you can see from photos the return trip back had much more in store for us including Seals, Sea Lions and Minki Whales but the highlight from my perspective was the two Bald Eagles standing watching us on a rock.
Once back on land we
decided to celebrate with a nice meal out. Those that know my wife know that she is slim and likes to keep herself in shape running marathons. Did she mention she ran Boston this year? Those that really know her though will know that probably fewer people on the planet think about food more times in a day than Kate! This can be a double edged sword for someone like me who can probably eat more times in a day than most people on the planet. Anyway, with the assistance of our B&B owner and her own due diligence Kate chose ‘Duck Soup Inn’ for dinner. Described as fine dining with a heavy emphasis on local fare we were excited. We drove a few miles in land and arrived at a rustic log building on a lake in the middle of the woods with a nicely lit dining room and small out door area. We were seated and given the menu and offered drinks by the waitress. We were a little shocked to be informed that all the mains came with ‘soup and salad’. For those non-americans reading this the ‘soup and salad’ ploy is used in many restaurants in
the US to push up the price of the entrée and give you a little something in return, even if you don’t really want it, but costs the kitchen very little. To be offered this in a fine dining establishment made us nervous. Nevertheless everything else felt good so we carried on ...
I believe I can safely say that I doubt I will never eat a better dinner with ‘soup & salad’ in my life and for a price that was no more than an average/poor restaurant in our local California town. If you are ever on San Juan Island in Washington State make the short trip inland, its worth it.
For those of you that read earlier blog you will recall that we are off to Central America in about a weeks time. As such we are both learning Spanish. At the last time of writing I could talk about eggs, milk and two green bicycles. I haven’t moved forward very much with the Spanish however but imagine our surprise when we passed a shop renting nothing but GREEN BICYCLES! See the photo. Unfortunately I can only recall the numbers for 1-10 but I am sure
this is some sort of good omen for our trip!
