300 YEAR OLD OAK
President L. B. Johnson held staff meetings under this oak at his "Texas White House". We left Hempstead for Stonewall on a grey somewhat windy day.
We would be in the Texas hill country for a couple more days.
The hill country is the best part of texas in my opinion.
Stonewall is a small town near the LBJ State and National Parks. When we arrived we realized there was probably only one RV Park so we stopped and asked someone at the park if it was the one we were looking for, he said no it was about a quarter mile further. We went about a mile and decided it must have been the one. Durham got permission to turn arround in someone's front lawn, then we had to cross traffic to check in then cross back over and go down the road to a gas station to turn arround then about a block back across traffic to the park. Great start to our time in the area. We went to Johnson City that afternoon and saw the boyhood home of LBJ. The next day we went to the park where we went to a living farm which was really interesting. It was being run like it would have been back in the
LIVING RANCH
This ranch located at the LBJ State Park, is being operated as it would have been in the late 1800's. 1890's. After that we went to the part of the park where LBJ had his "Texas Whitehouse". We were only able to get a tour of his office but did drive arround part of the ranch. The office was too small for large groups so when he had big meetings he held them under the tree in the picture.
From Stonewall we went to Ft. Stockton on a very windy Saturday. That night it was so windy we could only put the bedroom out. We sat cramped up in the livingroom a little while and went to bed early. Sunday was a little less windy so after church we drove arround to see some of the town. AT one time it was a quite large town but with a large spring but it dried up from over use and the town has been dying for a while. Monday was another windy travel day as we made our way to El Paso where we stayed at FT. Bliss.
Wednesday April 15 we finally got through Texas and headed to Davis Montham AFB in Tuscon, AZ. I had been there once but Durham wanted to see the aircraft bone yard
DURHAM STANDING BY DISPLAY OIL PUMP
This oil pump was on display by the visitor center in Fort Stockton, Texas. so we spent 2 nights.
Our next stop was to visit my daughter in Mesa, but before we got there I found out she was ill. We took the route we had used 2 years ago and found that Tuscon had grown about 20 miles north from where we had seen it before. The additional length of city really slowed our travel but we got to Mesa as Michelle was being discharged from the hospital. Since Michelle was not able to work we got to spend more time together than usual. I was sorry she was ill but really enjoy the time together and an opportunity to get to know her again. Marty, a friend from back home, had been laid up here in Mesa for a couple weeks so we got to spend an afternoon with her and took her up to meet Michelle. We had a great visit and Marty moved on the next day.
We hope to leave Monday but Max was having skin problems so we took him to the Vet and found out he has a thyroid problem so we have to take him back Monday morning. Hopefully we will get our mail
BORDER PATROL MUSEUM
We visited the Border Patrol Museum in El Paso, Texas. tomorrow and finish at the vet early enought to leave Monday. I had to go to the clinic today to find out I had a fungus on my ring finger and it was spreading to my other hand. Hopefully the meds will have it under control soon.
We hope to slow down after this and be able to post a blog weekly unless we have nothing to say.
