Bridge from Port Isabel to South Padre Island
Port Isabel is the last Texas town you enter before crossing the bridge onto South Padre Island. It is a small waterside community of about 5000 people. The tourist industry is one of the main industries for the community. The area is often a target for hurricanes and storms that come in from the ocean, thus evacuation by some residents have taken place in the past. An island area formally known as Resort America houses several hundred retirees. The only way into the resort area is across a bridge that rotates across the inter coastal waterways. The residents of the retirement community advise this is a constant drain of resources on the resort as they must maintain this private bridge. During hurricane evacuation the bridge is not accessible to the island. In town one can find numerous restaurant, internet cafes and fairly cheap hotel accommodations. That is not the case once you cross the bridge onto South Padre Island.
