Show me the way to Amarillo! - today's blog is written by steph.....
Well the title says it all really, today is all about heading to Amarillo Texas, no doubt with some cheesy renditions of the song along the way. We all managed to get up fairly early today which will give us a good head start to getting there? We are becoming experts at working the waffle machine now (we will be full on Americans soon) 3 waffles made between us without any leaking or smoking!
Kerry is starting off the driving this morning which she is pleased about as driver picks the music, needless to say she has lined up all her road trip driving tunes for car karaoke throughout the morning. Since leaving Oklahoma City and joining Route 66 again, it is exactly how I imagined it to be - big open space with a road running through it and just seeing the occasional car, it's perfect. The views are great and makes you feel quite small in such a big space. Sitting in the back is good, don't need to focus on driving or navigating, just sit back and look and the views. Although as
I'm writing this I keep looking at my fingers and wondering if my purple nail varnish matches my pink jeans?
We stopped in Clinton, OK to visit a Route 66 museum. We pulled up outside to see a classic car painted with Route 66 memorabilia. We thought it was part of the museum but as we were leaving we saw the owner drive off in it! The museum was pretty good and showed Route 66 throughout the decades and played the relevant music for each era.
Arriving in Texas we had the mandatory photo under the state border line sign (has to be done). Getting out the car we realised the temperature has definitely increased and is now very pleasant, although I believe tomorrow's weather should be better! Driving along we all seemed to get a bit too excited about seeing our first tumble weed roll across the road, slowing right down to allow it to continue to cross the road unharmed. Katie has taken over the driving now and there is a definite change in music tastes, luckily I like most music so seem to like what they both play.
Just stopped at the first Phillips
66 gas station, very small and cute which has been restored complete with truck with bullet holes in the windscreen?? Made for some good photos though. We proceeded to get slightly lost after this and ended up down a dirt track/gravel track but it had great scenery and made for some laughs along the way (always needed). We also drive past the largest cross in the Western Hemisphere (190ft), impressive to some I'm sure but didn't really interest any of us.
Just before we headed into Amarillo we go prepared to put the Tony Christie song on to have a good old sing song. Put it on and pressed play and waited for the words to kick in.... And waited and waited, then realised I'd downloaded the instrumental version of the song! So whilst recording on the video camera Katie and Kerry decided to freestyle it nd made up some words, the only bits I can remember are 'show me the way to Amarillo, because I want to hug a pillow, show me the way to Amarillo where a big steak waits for me!'.
Arriving at the big texan ranch we were greeted with the smell of steak,
the other two loved but the veggie - not so much. As the other two had starved themselves all day in preparation for their steak dinners we headed out for an early dinner across the road at the steak house. I wasn't a big fan . . . Stuffed animals all round the ceiling etc, and no vegetarian meals so ended up having a couple of side dishes. Three people were attempting the 72oz steak challenge, as you can imagine they all failed (what did they expect - it was huge). Had a brief look at the gift shop and tried on a few cowboy hats before heading back to the room to lounge on the beds.
All in all, a good day.
