Yesterday Maggie and I landed in Memphis after a plane journey from Portland and we settled into a comfy Hampton Inn for the night. This morning we got up a little late because we are still adjusting to the time difference. Even so, we were on the road by 9:30, I think. (I don't know for sure because we are not keeping strict account of the time. We are on vacation, you know!) We drove up Interstate 40 to Brownsville where we stopped at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center. It was surprisingly informative and definitely a worthwhile visit. We learned about cotton and how it is currently grown and processed. There was also a section of the museum about Tina Turner was born just down the road in Nutbush, TN. From there we drove up to Reelfoot Lake to see the cypress swamp and walk on the boardwalk in the State Park there. We also got some good information about the seismic activity in the area which is near New Madrid, MO. (A series of earthquakes that occurred in the area in 1811-1812 are responsible for the formation of Reelfoot Lake.) After that we drove up to Union City, TN and are stopped here for the night. Tomorrow we press on into Kentucky.
