Downtown Jonesboro Tennessee
Downtown street in Jonesboro TN Some books and maps refer to this town as Jonesboro while others spell the name of the town Jonesborogh. Regardless it is a neat little town in far eastern Tennessee. It is the oldest town in Tennessee and was actually founded in 1779 seventeen years before Tennessee became a state. The current population is around 4000. The town relies heavily upon visitors as one of its primary incomes.According to a plaque in the town, the town that attempted to become a separate state in 1784 and was to have been named the State of Franklin. Unfortunately Congress never recognized the new state. Preservation has been key as will be noted throughout the town. The town host the International Storytelling Center which is located downtown and is a site for visitors in fall each year. Chester Inn is located downtown and is one of the town's most predominate historical buildings. A visit to the tow is a must if you are in East Tennessee. There are several nice small restaurants int eh downtown area. The town decorates in the fall for Halloween and in the winter for Christmas.We visited during the fall and the pictures with this article reflect the fall decorations.

Fall decorations throughout the town of Jonesboro The town is about 15 miles from Johnson City and about 80 miles east of Knoxville.There is a lot historical to see in far east Tennessee plus the outdoor activities are never ending in the Smokies.
