Hehehehehe Weenery!
So this picture is clearly from yesterday but I've just managed to get a few camera pictures onto my iPad and I just love this!! Plus, for some reason, I didn't get photographic in franklin! On Monday morning, we packed up our bags, loaded our car and drove the 20 minutes south to the old town of Franklin which is just outside Nashville. On the way there we passed some absolutely gorgeous houses and even drove down to side streets just to have a nosy!
Franklin itself was amazing, imagine old fashioned America and Franklin is what you come up with. The town is steeped in history (American time scale history though obviously) and apparently there was one of the biggest battles of the American civil war fought there. We saw pieces of that history as we strolled around the antique shops and other independent, gorgeous stores. Sometime in the form of artifacts found on peoples' land, sometimes in the stories which were written on big plaques around town.
On the Main Street was, what has to be, the coolest bar I have ever been in. It was a strange blend of oldy worldy american with an ex industrial space. If I ever have a bar, I am going to try to recreate that place. It oozed cool and we were gutted that there was no live music on there because I bet the atmosphere would have been great. In Nashville there would have been at least 3 bands playing at midday!
Our flights were at 5ish so the car got dropped off at 3. A man in a giant golf cart offered us a ride to check in, we were very glad we accepted his offer, not only because he sped the whole way and it was like being on a roller coaster (seriously!!) but also because it was about 5 minutes going at a fair speed so it would have been a long ol' walk with our suitcases!
Mine and Patty's flight departed first and was only about 1/2 full so we weren't sardined in. We landed early to a sky full of lightning and pouring with rain. As the weather was so terrible, we had to just sit on the Tarmac once we landed as they couldn't let any flights board as the lightning was striking close to the airport. We were told it would be about 10 minutes... 30-40 minutes later we finally started to move and eventually got off the plane.
After picking up our luggage and missing the first bus we caught the little bus to my car, loaded it up, andddddddd, engine warning light came on. I revved my engine a little and crossed my fingers that it was just because the car hadn't been started in several days... Nope engine warning light still on! We decided to take the car back to Alamo on our way home (by now it was gone 10pm) after we picked patty's car up. The rain was pouring, the Orlando traffic in roadworks was just moronic and we were going at geriatric slug speed. We finally got to the rental car place (which opened until midnight according to their website) and it shut at 4pm!! So off like sloths in the rain we slowly made our way back to patty's house with the plan to return the car on Tuesday morning. Not a great journey home, but being by the lake at chateaux Herder is the greatest feeling and I knew that as so as my head hit that pillow, I'd sleep my socks off!!
