re: swimming mandatory
I am going to say no as most of us are not good swimmers. However knowing to swim is definitely a plus as you would not be scared of the water if you fall out. But as long as the instructions are followed, you'll do fine :) The guides and the companies have many rafts together so they team catch anyone who falls off :) I floated for about 1/2 a mile this time, it was scary!

Looks like you guys never used the paddles to steer the raft......late a graduate pannu podhum....I'll join you guys for the next summer trip :-)
