Edit Blog Post
So I have come to the end of my time in the USA and I am only getting round to writing my blog. Hopefully I will be a little more organised in South America!
Stuart and I spent a week travelling up and through to Charleston, Washington and Atlantic City. Our first stop, Charleston we stayed with my friend,Nicole, from Leeds for two nights. Nicole is working in South Carolina for four months so we thought it would be nice to meet a friendly face from home on our trip. After travelling all day, we finally made it to Nicoles and she took us out for chicken wings and beer...a proper american dish! We had the wings in all sorts of flavours and made it our mission to try and devour 50 wings between us...we made it to 40- good effort I think!! Then we went to a bar and tried some interesting flavours of beer - peanut butter and jelly and a banana and chocolate one. They were actually quite tasty.
The next day, Nicoles friend came round in the moring and made us breakfast- french toast and bacon. The french toast was the best I have ever
had. Hopefully I can get the recipe from Nicole when I get back to England. We then went to a local music festival. Charleston is a very marshy area and because the festival was near the river (and it had been raining all night) it was very muddy. Our feet were covered. It was a nice day with some good bands on. We were a little worried it would just be country music but most of the bands were surprisingly good. We attempted to go out that evening but I was really tired soi we didnt staz too long.
Up early the next day, Nicole walked with us around Charleston. The area and the buildings are very beautiful. The buildings look very European and it was very clean. While we were walking by the sea, we saw dolphins jumping in and out of the water, Crazy! I didnt expect to see dolphins. We really liked Charleston. It was shame we didnt have more time there to look around properly.
Our longest drive was to Washington...10.5 hours!! My hero Stu drove all the way and we were both really tired when we finally arrived. We found a flat to
rent on airbandb.com, about a 45 minute walk from the city centre. It was really cold there so the hats were definitely coming out with us from then on!
Our first full day in Washington we went round to see all of the famous buildings and memorials- including: the white house, the Capitol, Washington Monument, the Lincoln memorial, Martin Luthor King memorial and a few more!! Beautiful buildings that were loked after very well. One thing that surprised us both is how much smaller things are in real life! All our lives we have watched TV and films with these buildings or memorials in and they always look huge. In real life they are so much smaller. We have found this throughout our trip.
That eveing, Stuarts childhood wish came true. We went to see WWE wresting (WWE MONDAY RAW). We had brilliant seats near the front, right in front of the camera on the opposite side. Because we were straight across from the camera, this meant that we were on TV 90% of the time! The show was being broadcast live and we could see ourselves on the huge TV screen. It was very exciting! The wresting
matches were crazy, just like on TV. Staurt had a brilliant time, it was fun just watching his face and seeing how happy he was!
The next day, we had a four hour drive to Atlantic City. The higher we drove up the east coast the colder it was getting so I was dreading getting out of the car! Atlantic City was freezing and very windy. We decided to go to Atlantic City becaue we really enjoyed Las Vegas and we had heard Atlantic City is like a mini LV...not true. It felt very unsafe there and totally did not live up to expectations. It was no where near as nice and it looked a bit scruffy and out dated.
We spent our first night talking to a guy named Mike Hinder who proclaimed he was going to be the next Richard Branson! He was an interesting man to talk to but I think he was living in an imaginary world. Do men that have dog hairs on their jumpers and paint on their trousers have the same wealth as Richard Branson? Hmmm Im not sure.
The next day we walked along the famous boardwalk. There is
a program called Boardwalk Empire and it is set in Atlantic City, I think it was a lot more glamorous back in the day. We had a lazy night in and watched a film which was nice after our hectic long drives.
The next day was my birthday. We did a bit of shopping. Stu bought me a new dress and some converse so that I had a warmer outfit for New York as I had packed the majority of my backpack for warm weather. Stuart took me out or a nice meal that evening (no birthday cake and candle though...I need to train him better!). Afterwards, we went to the casino where we didnt win any money which was a shame. Oh well, cant win all the time!
