Whilst in the DC are I spent some time touring the nearby civil war battlefield sites such as Gettysburg, Antietam Creek, First Bull Run and Fredricksburg. All these sites are national parks and have been extremeley well preserved. You can do self-guided tours of the battlefields by car or foot or even run the trails if you want. Ended up spending at least half a day at each (think Gettysburg took me 6 hours to get round). A very insightful and humbling trip and my knowledge of the civil war has improved a lot
