Hostel
Front of the hostel This will be my first blog about a road trip. I take road trips all the time but I have never written about them. I quite enjoy driving aimlessly and I can drive 12 hours in one day so I can go a great distance in just a few days. For this trip I will have a driving companion, my good friend Danielle Takacs
I originally wanted to go to NYC but the greater distance and the fact we only had a weekend caused Danielle to veto that idea (GRRRRRRRRR). So we settled on Cleveland and honestly the only thing I know about Cleveland is that their river was on fire at some point. Before we left Danielle and I worked out a few things we could see, Christmas Story house, Rock and Roll hall of fame and the art museum. So the plan was to leave around 3 or 4pm on Friday evening. It would be my first long distance drive with my new car so I was looking forward to the test.
My travel companion Danielle Takacs I have known since high school. She is funny and nice person to hang out with and that is one
of the reasons I asked her on these trips. We have spirited debates all of time mostly because we have opposing political views.
Trip started in a carpool lot in Burlington and it should be a 4 - 5 hour drive depending on traffic. We left a bit later than I liked and we had to stop at Wendy's on the way as Danielle had some work she had to get done. Next hangup was the border itself. The electronic bulletins said the Ft Erie crossing had no wait but once we reach it there was a long lineup of cars. Thankfully I had some tv shows on my Android phone so we spent the next hour watching Daily Show, Colbert Report and The Big Bang Theory. Measuring the time we waited by these shows, we were waiting at the border for over an hour. Thankfully in the end the border officer asked us a few simple questions and waved us through.
All the delays meant we would not reach Cleveland until at least 11:30PM. Drive itself was fairly quiet as we drove through a number of old highways. I was curious why my gps would take me
on such a strange route until I realized I had set it to avoid toll roads which are common in New York. Oh well it didn't add that much extra time to our journey and we went through some interesting small towns along the way.
We were both exhausted by the time we reached Cleveland and I will admit my vision was starting to blur at the end because I had my contacts in for far too long. Danielle was not in much better shape and I will say I thought I was having conversations with her before I realized her responses made no sense and than I realized she was talking in her sleep (LOL). Finally after maneuvering through some closed roads and bad gps instructions we pulled into the parking lot of The Cleveland hostel.
I usually stay in hostels while travelling. The Cleveland Hostel is the only hostel in the city and opened just over a year ago. I read some reviews of the place and they got good reviews. I had called ahead once I realized how late we were going to be and we used the code they gave us to get into the building. I picked up an envelope with my name on it and we dropped off our luggage in the room. We ate some sandwiches and snacks that Danielle's mom had made us (Thank You Mrs Takacs). After that we were both exhausted and went back to our room. The room had 2 double beds and was quite large for hostel room. We went to sleep shortly after midnight and we both were looking forward to start our Cleveland adventure.
