New York

Nachdem ich mit einiger Verspaetung in Niagara Falls losgefahren bin, das erste Mal freundliche amerikanische Zoellner antraf und eher schlecht geschlafen habe, kam ich am Morgen frueh in New York an. Dort wurde ich von der Hitze gerade zu erschlagen und so war ich dann froh, als ich in der Jugi ankam, mein Gepaeck deponieren konnte und zuerst einmal noch etwas schlafen konnte. Da Kristin erst am Abend ankam und es etwa vierzig Grad warm war, begab ich mich in den Central Park wo ich einfach nur relaxte. Doch selbst dafuer war es zu heiss. So begab ich mich dann in das nahegelegene Einkaufszentrum, wo es zu meiner grossen Ueberraschung ein Samsungladen hatte, in dem man WM schauen konnte. Somit habe ich meine Beschaeftigung fuer den Nachmittag gefunden und ich schmunzelte einige Male ab den Deutschen die neben mir sassen und den Match Spanien - Deutschland mitkommentierten…
Am Abend machte ich mich dann auf den Weg zum Flughafen, wo ich Kristin wieder traf. Vielleicht erinnert ihr euch, mit ihr war ich bereits in Vancouver und in Maui :-) Es war absolut super, sie nach einem halben Jahr wieder zu sehen, mit ihr zu berichten und in Erinnerungen zu schwelgen. Als es dann endlich etwas kuehler war (naja, so etwa 25 Grad ;-) gingen wir das erste Mal auf Entdeckungstour am Broadway. Da wir jedoch schon ziemlich muede waren, kehrten wir bald ins Hostel zurueck, so dass wir dann auch fit sind fuer den naechsten Tag.
Die naechsten paar Tage war es dann nicht mehr ganz so heiss, aber immer noch etwa 33 Grad… Dazu kommt, dass in New York die Luft ziemlich sticking ist und es in den Subway Stationen noch einiges heisser ist als draussen. Nun ja, trotz der Hitze besichigten wir New York in den vier Tagen sehr ausgiebig. Angefangen beim Times Square gingen wir Richtung Financial District. Nun ja, nach einiger Zeit beschlossen wir, dass etwas sitzen mal wieder ganz gut waere und so nahmen wir die Faehre zur Staten Island von wo man einen super Blick auf die Freiheitsstatue und die Skyline New Yorks hat. Anschliessend begaben wir uns in den Financial District, wo wir ploetzlich inmitten hunderten von Geschaeftsleuten waren. Doch so stressig wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe, war es auch dort nicht. Wir kamen dann auch am Ground Zero vorbei, das ja eigentlich nicht wirklich Zero ist… es gleicht eher einer riesigen Baustelle und wie wir feststellten, stehen die untersten rund zehn Stockwerke des einten Turms noch immer… man lernt nie aus. In den naechsten Tagen besuchten wir dann auch das Soho, Noho und Nolita, sowie Greenwich Village. Wir fanden ueberall immer wieder interessante und sehr verschiedene Laeden, und das brachte immer wieder eine angenehme Abkuehlung mit sich. Eines Nachmittages gingen wir auf das Empire State Building (das von unten recht klein wirkt) um die Stadt auch von oben zu sehen. Ist schon gewaltig, wie viele Skyscrapers es in New York gibt. Auch den Central Park haben wir mal durchquert und stellten dabei fest, dass dieser eigentlich gar nicht so gross war. Mit den vielen Joggern und ihren Hunden kamen wir uns allerdings einige Male wie im Film vor. Auch Little Italy (das eigentlich genau au seiner Strasse besteht, aber voll ist mit italienischen Restaurants und Souvenirs) und Chinatown statteten wir einen Besuch ab. In Chinatown gingen wir in einen buddhistischen Tempel und das war sehr beeindruckend. Ansonsten war Chinatown halt so das uebliche… An unserem letzten Tag in New York gingen wir dann nach Brooklyn und liefen ueber die Brooklyn Bridge zurueck nach Downtown New York. Am Nachmittag gingen wir dann selbstverstaendlich den WM-Final schauen. Die Menschen in New York waren zum groessten Teil Spanienanhaenger, doch als Spanien gewann, merkte man gar nicht viel davon… wir ashen viel mehr Hollaender auf der Strasse als Spanier… naja, schlussendlich fanden wir dann doch noch einige feiernde spanische Fans. Das erstaunlichste kam dann allerdings am Abend, als wir ploetzlich vor einem Tim Hortons standen… und wir dachten immer, dass es das nur in Kanada gibt :-)
Obwohl New York nicht gerade eine schoene Stadt ist, genossen wir es doch sehr, dort zu sein und die Stadt hat definitive ihren Reiz. Doch waren wir auch froh, ab und zu mal wieder frische Luft einatmen zu koennen :-)

New York

After leaving the Niagara Falls with quite a bit of a delay, the first time that I’ve met friendly people at the American border and a rather bad night of sleep I arrived in New York in the early morning. There I was hit by the heat and therefore I was glad when I arrived at the hostel, got rid of my luggage and could get some sleep. As Kristin arrived in the evening and it was about 40 degrees, I decided to relax in Central Park. But even for that it was too hot, so I went to the shopping center across the street where, to my big surprise, there was a Samsung store where I could watch the world cup. So I found something to do for the afternoon and I had to laugh a couple of times because of the Germans sitting next to me who were commentating the game Spain - Germany as if no one could understand them…
In the evening I went to the airport where I met Kristin again. We studied together in Vancouver and we also were in Maui together last December. It was absolutely cool to see her again and to chat and remember all the cool things we experienced. When it eventually cooled down a little, we walked along Broadway. But as we were both quite tired, we soon went back to the hostel so that we would be ready for sightseeing the next day :-)
Luckily it wasn’t that hot for the next couple of days, but with 33 degrees still too hot for sightseeing. Furthermore, the air in New York is not very fresh and in the subway stations it’s boilingly hot. Well, despite the heat we wanted to see everything within these for days. Therefore we started at Times Squares and headed down to the financial district. After about half the way, we got tired of walking and took the ferry to get to Staten Island. From the ferry we had a terrific view on the skyline and also on the Statue of Liberty. Returning from Staten Island we headed towards the financial district where we suddenly were surrounded by hundreds of businesspeople. However, it wasn’t as stressful as I thought. We continued towards the ground zero, which is not actually zero. It is rather a huge construction site and as we learnt, the approximately first ten floors of the one tower are still there! The next couple of days we visited Soho, Noho and Nolita and also went to Greenwich Village. We found some interesting stores everywhere and therefore got a nice refreshment once in a while. One afternoon we went on top of the Empire State Building (which looks rather “small” from the bottom) to see the city from a bird’s point of view. It’s absolutely amazing how many skyscrapers there are in New York. We also walked through Central Park which was, to our big surprise, not that big. However, as there were so many joggers with their dogs, we sometimes felt like in the movies. One day we also went to Little Italy (which is basically one street of Italian restaurants and souvenirs) and Chinatown. In Chinatown we went to see a buddhistic temple which was very impressive. Besides, Chinatown was pretty much the usual… On our last day in New York we went to Brooklyn and of course walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. In the afternoon we obviously had to watch the world cup’s final. Most of the New Yorker wanted Spain to win, but when they finally won, there was not much of a celebration… we actually came across more Holland fans than Spain fans, which was quite disappointing… But eventually we did find some celebrating Spanishs… However, the most amazing thing was when we suddenly stood in front of a Tim Hortons… and we always thought that Tim Hortons only exists in Canada…
Even though New York is not what I would call a beautiful city, it has its attractions and we really enjoyed being there. However, we were also glad to get some fresh air from time to time…
