Boston
Boston
From New York Kristin and me went to Boston where we could breathe in fresh air for the first time in days. Furthermore, we found more modern subways, less hot subway stations and quite a few historic buildings.
As we only arrived in the afternoon, we only went to explore the neighbourhood of our hostel on our first day. Our hostel would usually be the residence of the Boston University but during
summer break it turns into a hostel. Therefore we had a three-bed room with its own bathroom and furniture with desks and wardrobes. It was quite luxurious for a youth hostel. Not far from the hostel there was the river, where we took a break from sightseeing a couple of times. In the evening we found a cheesecake factory and of course we couldn’t just pass it. Next to it, there was a church with a pool (which is only for decoration) in front of it. According to some guide, this was the perfect place to bring your date… well, it did look nice, especially by night when the church and the surrounding buildings were illuminated.
Our daily breakfast we found very close to our hostel, in the bagel bakery. Every morning we were expected by a fresh bagel with cream cheese. Full of energy we explored Boston within four days. As it turned out quite soon, Boston was quite a bit smaller than we expected it to be. However, the advantage of that was that we could walk to nearly everywhere. In the public garden we found the statue of the ducklings which is there because of a Boston
kid’s book (which is really cute…). On the freedom trail we found some historically relevant buildings, the old and new city hall, a few churches, small streets and a few markets. Boston is definitely more beautiful than New York…
The rainy day we spent to a big part in the shopping mall. Once it started clearing up we headed to Newbury Street where one can find all kind of small shops. There were also a few quite alternative shops. One day we also spent in Harvard where we had a look around the university area. From what we’ve heard about it we expected something bigger but anyway I think it would be a nice place to study.
On our last day we wanted to go to Boston Islands. When we got to the ferry terminal to buy our tickets we learnt that it was free Friday and therefore it was only possible to visit one island and then stay there for three hours. That explained why there were so many people at the harbour. Anyways, as we didn’t have a choice, we waited for the afternoon and took off to one of the “big” islands. It was great to get
out to nowhere and we had the opportunity to see Boston from a new perspective.
The last evening of our time together we went to the cheesecake factory again. Once again it was really tasty, but it was a little too much. Therefore I guess it’s good that we won’t have the next opportunity to eat real cheesecake within the next few months…
On Saturday it was already time to say goodbye. Kristin travelled on to Long Island and I went to the airport from where I flew to Mexico to visit Maria.
Pictures will follow as soon as possible...
