Today is the last day in New York so we decided our last trip had to be ...Central Park. I wanted a ride in a horse drawn carriage and we thought about the zoo but Jackie isn't keen on smelly animals and Mike wanted to walk along the high line tour which was about a two hour hike which I couldn't manage. In the end we took a cab and hired a carriage and driver to take us for 45minute tour around the park. I was in second heaven as I love horses and this was something on my bucket list. It was a gentle ride through the beauty and peace of Central Park an 843 acre Oasis in the heart of the busy city... if I lived in New York I would be here all the time.
The driver pointed out attractions along the way and stopped for us to take photos, we saw Catherine Zeta Jones, Demi Moore and John McEnroe's apartments and we took a quick 5 minutes to walk through Strawberry Fields with the memorial to John Lennon, and a busker playing Imagine on his guitar... ) It was a great way to spend an hour
and I was impressed that Jackie actually gave the horse a carrot.. she doesn't normally do slobber and horse smells.....
So we had spent the morning in my comfort zone - the peace and quiet of the park, the fresh air and the lovely smell of horses, to compensate we spent the next hour in Jackie's comfort zone ( well we didn't make it to a golf course so second best was shops on 5th Avenue! J&M spent ages finding the right shirts for the boys in Hollister and then went to pay to find a queue about 30mins long!!! to pay?..!!.. in protest they left the T shirts behind and we went for a walk to find Planet Hollywood.
En route there was a park and a band started to play so we sat for a while to rest my knee and listened to the open air gig - they were good.. covers from the seventies and eighties and it was a great place for me to do one of my favourite things..people watching. My curious nature lends itself very nicely to this. I wonder where they are going and where they come from... i am fascinated
by different cultures...loved the way a lady of (I'm guessing African/American) origin about my age was walking past the band as they performed a song and she stopped, all on her own, and danced for them.. bless her I wanted to high five her but was sat down and if I get up quickly my knee gives way I would have fallen at her feet... she wasn't that good..
Lunch was lovely .. just a Planet Cheeseburger and fries and my new favourite drink - pink lemonade...! just right. Jackie and Mike headed off together for their healthy walk and Martin and I were about to walk home, we managed a few blocks and Martin wasn't sure of the directions ...it didn't look hopeful when I watched him looking at the roadsigns saying ..never eat shredded wheat (NESW) trying to decide which direction we should head for 145e 49th street... he then made an executive decision .. bugger this and stopped a passing cab (who blatentley ripped us off by going a good few blocks out of the way in a big wide circle to drop us off 2 block s from the hotel and charged us ten bucks
when it is normally 6 or 7 - I hope his doors fall off!)
Our version of a healthy afternoon was to crash on the sofa with a coffee and some rubbish TV (British TV is better) I won't be so quick to moan about the ads now as everything is repeated so much more over here.
it was a nice lazy afternoon and a bit of quiet ( well New York quiet) until the door opened a few hours later when Dora the Explorer and Akele walked in shattered from their long walk... Dora bagged the bath for "the next 3 hours" to recover and Akela crashed out on the sofa.
A few hours later and they were refreshed and packed their cases for our early start to San Francisco tomorrow. It's a breeze for them .. always well organised.. always enough clothes and always plenty of spare suitcase space...not like me and Martin... remember I said we don't travel well together?.. well if I am OCD with the packing it's because I am very particular about how everything is done and Martin is.. well just rubbish at packing and so after twenty years he has
learnt to stay well out of my way and for the sake of marital harmony he lets me get on with it..He did start to do his this time but phew I managed to get in there just in time (25 pairs of socks.. honestly 25!... what is he a bloody octopus!..lol )
Anyway I know Mike is secretly concerned about my packing OCD and he thinks I am a bit crazy he may be super quick and efficient ( I bet it's all just thrown in any old how not like mine which fits like a tetris frame... I almost want customs to make me open it to see the look of admiration on their faces!!
Anyway... I have to admit ( Tammy warned me) the bag I bought for holiday is too big and I have to keep checking it for illegals ..consequently I keep losing stuff especially my new tiny camera, I couldn't find my glasses case in which I had stuffed all my credit cards and Manx money.. now Martin will tell you I panicked but I never did I kept calm called him in the room and told we had a problem...luckily after
a minute or two he remembered it was in the safe in the Murleys room ...phew ...two minutes when you think you have lost all your cards is a long time and by then we were ready to kill each other ,, ..
Mike being the brilliant husband he is left Jackie to rest whilst he went out to get them a Pizza and Martin and I decided to take a stroll to the pub. Cases were ready and a quick one was just what we needed so we headed to the Irish Bar.. We sat outside and watched the world go by .. then bought a subway and headed back to get some sleep before our early start.. and another long flight ahead.... I'll be back when we get to San Francisco x
