Holding the Sun
This is on the way into Vegas as the sun set.
I Need Wha-tah On to our next adventure…we had to drive through Death Valley in order to get into Nevada. Yep, it’s a valley. hot. wide. And that’s about the extent of it. The lowest part was 200 feet below sea level and the highest point was well above 1000 feet so we were getting some serious elevation change. We really enjoyed cruising down the other side of the giant hills, evidently the pavers didn’t want to go through all the trouble of flattening out the dips so with a little speed we were loosing our stomachs… it was BOMB…whatever entertains you through the long drive of Death Valley I guess. 😊
Finally we reached Las Vegas at about 9:30pm. We actually arrived a day earlier than our reservations so we had to find a place to stay. Did you know there is a KOA campground on the main Las Vegas strip? Neither did we but we found it next to Circus Circus and totally scored one of the only two tent sites at the campground! Camping in Vegas, who woulda knew?!! OK, let me give you a visual here… this Vegas strip campground was a huge asphalt parking lot with about
100 RVs and one tiny gravel square big enough to put about two tents. It looked like one of those RV sale specials they do at the mall parking lots every once in awhile. Apparently we checked in right after a group of four young guys who were also camping (that turned out to be Satan worshipers)….uh yeah, close quarters. The employees behind the counter felt bad for us because they knew they guys were partiers and were planning to be obnoxious all night, so they did us a favor and offered us the only tiny triangle of grass in the entire parking lot, actually the entire city of Las Vegas, to set up our tent on. It was about 8 feet by 8 feet and smack in the middle of the employee RVs. As ghetto as it was, we felt special. So we set up our tent with the wind howling and the bright lights of the Vegas strip shining down on us illuminating the entire tent. We were so tired from our long drive we went straight to sleep. At 2:30am I woke up to a big loud WHOOOOOOOOSHHHHHH against all four sides of our tent. It scared
Death Valley
It's too hot to even drive. me because it was so loud. I didn’t recognize the noise until it occurred to me… it was the sprinklers!!!! We were being sprayed on all four sides and from underneath too!! I woke up Natalie and we sat there freaking out because we couldn’t escape the tent because we would get sprayed at. We had to wait the entire cycle of the sprinklers before we could get out and evaluate the damage. Yep, everything got soaked. We couldn’t help but crack up…only us. THE ONLY triangle of grass in all of Las Vegas, we camp on it and we get totally soaked by the sprinklers!! HAHA! So of course that forced us to move our tent over to the gravel square with the Satan worshipers. They were gone out partying on the strip and they left their tent with no stakes keeping it attached to the ground. It was so windy when we got there we found it rolling all over the parking lot. But at this point we didn’t really care. So we spent the rest of the night lying in wet blankets with the glaring lights of the parking garage shining down on us…cracking up because of
Tent Setup #1
Here's our first tent setup area, with the small triangle of grass. Unbeknownst to your fearless travelers, there were evil sprinklers that lay beneath the surface... our situation. Thankfully, in the morning we got our money back and vowed never to camp on the Las Vegas strip again.
We moved all of our clothes and gear over to the Tropicana that afternoon and happily moved into the nice, clean, dry, room. Throughout our couple of days in Vegas we enjoyed walking the strip, checking out the different casinos/hotels, eating at yummy buffets and laying by the awesome tropical-themed pool at our hotel. Natalie gambled away 26 bucks we were sure would win her millions…bummer. We also got the chance to see a couple of shows while we were there. The first night we saw Folies Bergere which is the classic Vegas showgirls show. It was fun to watch… the showgirls had awesome costumes and inspired Natalie and I to learn how to dance better. The other show we saw the following evening was called Zumanity. This was hands down the BEST show Natalie and I have ever seen. IT WAS SOOO GOOD. It was basically Cirque du Soleil (you know, those artsy acrobats and gymnasts you see on PBS every once in awhile) with a sensual twist. We were really impressed with how they connected
Tent Setup #2
This is post-sprinklers. Note the sandy non-grassy area in which we had to relocate. The devil-worshippers' tent had blown nearly on top of ours. with the audience and their creativity. It was our favorite part of being in Sin City hands down. DON’T MISS IT on your next trip to Las Vegas.
Overall our time in Vegas was….interesting. We had a really great time. The above is basically the highlights, after all like they say, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. 😉
