Yellowstone
Arriving at Yellowstone National Park What a great week it has been. We left Denver and headed to Teton National Park where we spent a day putzing around, picking up some forgotten items and looking for a place for Bret to photograph sunset. Instead of staying in the Tetons we headed to Yellowstone. We camped just outside the park at a great campground that was FREE. We hope to remember it in the future. It was set aside a braided river which was beautiful and wonderful mountains in the backdrop. The next morning we left the campground and headed through the park to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. We hung out there for an hour photographing grizzly bears. Nice facility but not enough room for the bears to roam, I don't think. We then went back into the park, drove around and decided to head on up to Glacier National Park. We crashed for the night at a rest stop between Bozeman and Missoula. We got up the next morning and headed to Glacier. The drive there was beautiful. Mountains and rolling hills all along the way. We arrived at Glacier and secured a campsite at Avalanche campground. We got a great site next to
Bret and the Bear
Bret and the SCARY bear the bathrooms, which is always good 😊 After unhooking Harvey (our trailer) and getting camp organized we decided to go explore the park. We took a little stroll along the Trail of the Cedars to a beautiful waterfall called Avalanche Gorge. It is melted glacier water that has carved a path through some rock. We then drove up Going to the Sun Road and stopped at Logan Pass. We hiked the 1.5 miles to Hidden Lake Overlook where there was a family of Mounatin Goats. Nannies, Billies and kids. It was so great. They are very use to people and would get about 2 feet away from you while you photographed. We spent the next couple days driving around the park and taking little hikes here and there to waterfalls and to the beaches on the lake. We drove up to a little town close to the Canadian border called Polebridge. It is a very small town that was settled in the early 1900. The mercantile is a great little store with wonderful homemade pastries and beer. The next day we saw 2 grizzly bears which was exciting. So exciting for Bret that he was shaking and fumbling with his
camera while trying to photograph them. The first one we saw was about 100 yards away but the second one was closer. It was about 100 ft. from us when it walked out of the trees, over the trail and into another wooded area. It was really cool. 2 grizzlies in one day 😊 Yesterday we did and amazing hike. We parked at The Loop parking lot and hitchiked a ride up to the trailhead. The start of the Highline Trail. We started the hike at 3:30 and mosied down the trail. We came across a Nanny goat and kid using the trail as if it was their highway. We stepped off the trail so that they could pass by. It is such and experience to have wildlife walk less than a foot away from you. We continued down the trail with amazing wildflowers covering the hills. We passed another mountain goat and then headed up the trail towards the sky. During the hike we watched clouds roll in and out over the mountain peaks but stayed ahead of them until about 6.5 miles into the hike. Thats when the temperature dropped about 20 degrees and the wind came screaming
Glacier
Arriving at Glacier National Park in. It was frigid but we continued to hike on. We arrived at the Granet Park Chalet, which is a backpackers haven. You can reserve nights and hike in, stay a couple days in the backcountry and then head out. We are hoping to do it sometime in the future. We entered the dining area of the chalet where the warmth was a delight. One of the gentlemen that works there gave us free hot cocoa after seeing how cold we were. The chalet is such a warm and cozy place with people that are just as warm and friendly. After eating our sandwiches, cheez-its and the sodas and candy bars we bought there we headed back out into the cold. At this time the temperature was 39 degrees not counting the wind chill factor. It was really really cold. I lost feeling in my fingertips for a little bit, which scared me, but it came back. We jogged down the trail hoping that the lower we got on the mountain the warmer it would get and we were right. Eventually we made it out of the clouds and wind and into the sunshine. We had 4 miles to go
Pink Flower
Pink, of course! after leaving the chalet and we made it down in 1 hour and 15 minutes. We were cruising. We left Glacier today already missing it but knowing we will be back again. We headed to the North Cascades in Washington, but tonight we are staying in an RV park in Spokane. We will be arriving in the North Cascades tomorrow.
