We had practically finished our drive to the small town of Savannah, MO when “Emmy” our oh-so-reliable GPS System began insisting we turn on road 424…which would have been fine except for the fact that it didn’t exist! We knew we were a mere ten minutes from my Great Grandma Yettie’s house, yet, we had no idea how to get there, and somehow, we ended up on a gravel road that was sandwiched between acres and acres of farmland. Even though I had only been in the fourth grade the last time I’d been to my Grandma Yettie’s house, I was almost positive she lived in a neighborhood with paved roads as opposed to the farmland we were currently surrounded by! Turns out, my memory was right on, and we arrived at her house after about a half hour of aimless driving.
When we arrived, we were welcomed not only by my great grandma, but also by my grandparents and my mom! They were all in town to visit and it was nice to see everyone again after having been on the road for the past four weeks. The best part though was seeing my Great Grandma again. At
96 years old, she is still able to live alone in her own home, and she still insists on cooking eggs, buttered toast, and a pound of bacon for everyone to devour at breakfast!
After some pizza and a good night’s rest, and of course, entirely too much bacon and eggs in the morning, we spent the next day relaxing around the house and seeing some family members I hadn’t see in about 10 years. The relatives included my grandpa’s sister and her kids (which would be my mom’s cousins) and then their kids as well! That day, my Grandpa also declared that it looked as if the Ford Focus had been through a war (it was COVERED in dust from the gravel road) and that he would like to treat it to a carwash! By the time Brian and he had returned, the time had rolled around for my grandpa to take my mom to the airport to catch her flight home. After saying our goodbyes, Brian and I proceeded to indulge in a much-needed 2-hour nap.
We awoke around 5, which coincidentally is when my grandparents and great grandma eat dinner! After taking a few minutes
to get ready, the five of us piled into my grandpa’s car and headed off to a steak restaurant for dinner. The dinner was good (Grandpa treated!) and afterwards, Brian and I hung out with the family for a bit before going to our first drive-in movie! The movie theater had two screens, each showing two pictures. We chose to watch the screen showing movies currently in theaters as opposed to the screen showing old movies…as did almost all the other cars in attendance. To watch the first movie (Evan Almightly…which was terrible) we laid some towels down in front of the car and could see and hear everything fine. The people around us (veterans, it seemed like) had lawn chairs set up around a campfire and were eatin’ and drinkin’ all night long! After the first movie we’d had enough of sitting on the hard ground, so we got back in the car to listen to the movie, Knocked Up, through the radio! Brian and I honestly love this movie so if you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor, and go see it! You will be laughing the entire time. Anyway, it was cool going to a drive-in movie…now we know how all you old people used to do things! Haha, just kidding!!!
When woke around ten the next morning my grandparents had already hit the road. Brian was shocked to find out that my grandpa did all the driving all the way back to Maryland! After hearing this, he stopped complaining so much about our alternating 2 hour driving shifts!
So we said our goodbyes and had driven an hour towards Chicago when my grandpa called me to alert me to the fact that I’d left my computer back in Missouri. Fuming at myself, we drove back, picked up the computer, said our goodbyes once more, and then sped off towards Chicago.
