Rain gear
Ready to go in the morning, looking like spacemen with our gear on. Almost waterproof... After a long but very enjoyable first day, day 2 began with overcast skies and rain across the entire state of Kentucky. We put on the rain gear and got everything ready to go, and off we went into the storm. We took it easy and rode a wet 200 miles into Indiana before the rain stopped and the skies began to clear. For about 3 hours we had pushed through the rain and had a beautiful day (and what we expect to be a beautiful week) ahead of us. The miles racked up and we passed through Indiana and Illinois on to St. Louis.
We walked through St. Louis for a bit to go see the arch and take a few photos, and then headed out to Sweetie Pie's for dinner. With a line around the block, it ended up being well worth the wait for a great southern style meal of fried chicken, mac & cheese, green beans and black-eyed peas, along with some peach cobbler and homemade lemonade. We decided we should head southwest of St. Louis to avoid any rush hour traffic tomorrow, and ended up riding another 50 miles after dinner to Sullivan, MO where
Ooops, glove tattoos
Cheap leather gloves and a rain storm = dyed hands. we are now. We saw a bit of Rt. 66 along the way with some of the kitschy tourist-traps which we'll see plenty of the next few days (tee-pee village on the side of 66...).
We put on a total of about 460 miles today, and the next few days will be a lot less. We anticipate about 300 miles per day from here to Santa Fe, which should put us there on Wednesday evening.
A few of the pictures of the day are attached, the funniest of which is dad's hands having been stained with the leather dye from his gloves after a few hours riding in the rain.
More to come in the days ahead, but off to bed for now in preparation for another great day tomorrow.
