After a restful night's sleep at the W ALoft outside of Tulsa proper, we're ready to go - a big drive day today to St. Louis - over 400 miles. By the way, this hotel is great - the bed is like being in a nest and the rainhead shower rocks. The weird "ice in bags" not so much, but hey, can't have everything for 15k in AMEX points.
It's almost 11:00am when we roll and having eaten no breakfast, we decide a drive-thru lunch would be good. We had seen a few Chik-Fil-A locations in Amarillo and Oklahoma City, however, no such luck in Tulsa. We decide to try Freddy's Steakburgers. Freddy's turns out to be good but, make no mistake, it is not Steak-n-Shake. There, I said it, ha! ha! We hit I-44 for the power drive and more tolls (over $12 on this interstate). Northern Oklahoma and Southern Missouri have nice countrysides with the leaves turning crimson, gold and brown. Our next stop for gas leads us to the town of Joplin, Missouri... You may remember it was hit by an EF5 tornado in May of 2011. We drive through the section that was hit the hardest
and although they are rebuilding, you can still feel/sense the devastation.
Onward we march, with out next exit in Waynesville, Missouri on Route 66. Driving just to break up the highway driving we spot a rebel flag on one house and less than a mile away is a huge yard sign to "Stop Socialism-Vote Republican". A bit further and we see a Frog Crossing sign - no shit - an honest to goodness yellow sign for frogs crossing the road. This town covers the spectrum, hehe!
We arrive in St. Louis at 5:00pm and make it to the Moonrise Hotel. Joe Edwards is the owner and is an avid collector and a huge fan of lunar themes. It's a funky hotel and sits in an entertainment district known as the Delmar Loop. It has 140 specialty shops, 48 restaurants, 10 galleries and 14 entertainment/music venues. Among the famous landmarks are Blueberry Hill, the landmark restaurant and music club, The Pageant, a concert club, the 1924 Tivoli Movie Theater and the Pin-Up Bowl. We are in a very hip area, dude!! We walk around but can't seem to find the right restaurant for dinner so we make it back
to the Eclipse Restaurant (at the hotel). We were not disappointed! Sweetie had the wild mushroom soup with bacon and smoked gouda. She said it was creamy, smoky goodness! I had a nice caesar with anchovy aoili. Sweetie, still trying to shake the last of her sickness, made a healthy choice in a Cobb Salad. I however, did not! Pork Osso Bucco was slow cooked with the meat falling off the bone. YUMMMMMMY! It was served with roasted vegetable hash medley. Afterward, we make it up to the 8th Floor Rooftop Terrace Bar. Really nice evening (70s) and a terrific view of the Delmar Loop.
That's all for now but more to come as we head to Lake Geneva, Wisconsing for a long weekend of fun with family and friends!
