Camdenton Laker Football
Lakers on the field fighting for a playoff spot against Rolla MMark posting:
Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! I started this blog on Saturday morning but it is now Monday and we are on the road to Denver. Liz is driving the first segment through KC tp I-70 that will take us through Kansas and all the way to Denver. Before I recap our week at the lake I’d like to take a moment to point out a couple of National Lampoon moments from the past 24 hours (and actually 15 minutes) - just call me Clark and Liz can be referred to as Ellen.
• On Friday I took my car to have an oil change in anticipation of the trek to Jackson. It was overcast and a bit rainy so I had my headlights on. When I pulled into the driveway and parked the car it was just bright enough so that I could not tell my lights were still on. Also, my car does not beep at me to remind me to shut them off. We did not attempt to use my car again until Sunday night when it was time to pack it up and leave for Harrisonville. As it the sun started to set
CHS Marching Band
The Camdenton Laker marching band performs at halftime I noticed the interior light was not turning on when the doors were opened. I knew immediately what had happened and a modicum of panic set in. The car was in such a position that the available jumper cables would not connect between vehicles and the portable charger had a broken “claw”. AAA came to our rescue…an hour and thirty minutes later. We set off later than anticipated but at least we were able to completely dry our laundry and sit down for a bowl of chili.
• Only moments ago Liz asked if we were going to meet up with I-70 soon. I had been looking at our mapbook a few minutes earlier and determined that we had about 10 miles on 435 before we’d reach the junction. Then I put the maps down and starting in on the blog. By the time Liz posed her question it was too late. I looked up the realization that we were 6 miles past the exit to 70W, our home for the next 12 hours. Less than an hour in and we were already making a u-turn! To an extent the blame probably should be shared between driver and navigator.
Clothes Everywhere!
Mark and Liz have their clothes strewn across the room and on the pool table However, when we arrived back at the correct exit I took note of its location next to the NASCAR speedway that Liz was so excited to point out to me…somebody wasn’t paying attention!
In between searching for jobs up in Jackson these were the other big events that went on during our week at the lake:
• We arrived Monday night to margaritas and Italian sausage and spinach noodle soup…delicious!
• Tuesday Liz purchased materials to build a headboard for her bed. She also designed, cut and padded the wood. Tacos and lemon drops were the food and beverage of choice. Again, you’ll hear no complaints from me.
• Wednesday we went for a run and bought pumpkins. Then our suitcases and trash bags of clothing threw up all over the pool table and would not be cleaned up until Sunday. We met Vicki at the country club for drinks before returning to the house for pork chops with fried apples and onions.
• Thursday involved a whole lot of wind and rain. We visited the Osage Beach outlets to look for deals on winter gear. We found a monster sale on boots at Bass
Free Dog to a Bad Home
Willie had no idea she was being advertised to go to the lowest bidder...and this way the day after when cooler heads should have prevailed! and outerwear at Eddie Bauer. We went to dinner at Kinderhoook which overlooks a beautiful golf course.
• Friday was another windy day at the lake. The car was serviced and more errands were run. That night Liz and I went to the Camdenton High School (i.e. the Lakers) football game against previously undefeated Rolla. As you might be able to infer Camdenton came away with the win, 21-13, and clinched a spot in the state playoffs as a result. The win did not come without a bit of stress as Rolla blocked a punt deep in Laker territory, recovered the ball and ran it in for a touchdown to close the gap to 8. That was as close as they would get. Apparently Camdenton could have clinched the playoff berth without any help if they’d won by 13. Instead, CHS needed Waynesville to pull out a win against Lebanon. We also enjoyed the highly decorated Laker marching band during halftime. I was impressed with the entire experience.
• The weather was much improved on Saturday and I started my day with a run before helping Vicki with a few chores around the house. Liz had to return
Mark and Liz at Rendezvous
Mark and Liz in a self portrait after eating BBQ pork ribs at Rendezvous some items at the outlet and I spent an hour or two at Panera using the complimentary internet. We stopped at a family friend’s house on the way home to sit in on the garage party they were hosting. We welcomed tricker treaters and enjoyed cheese soup, chili, and a cold beer. There are only a couple neighborhoods in Camdenton where most of the kids go and this was one of them. By the time we left they’d already received more than 100 candy seekers and the sun had not yet set. While we were at the house Vicki called Liz to announce that she “was so mad she could spit!” Vicki had purchased two beautiful ribeye steaks from the butcher and had put them out on the counter. She stepped out the room for no more than a couple minutes and when she returned there was only one steak. Following her initial instincts she turned to her rotund cat before deciding there was no way “Wo Phat” could have put away that size steak so quickly. When her stare arrived at the family dog, Willie, it was obvious who was the culprit. Willie’s head went down, she started to
The Peabody
The famous ducks who swim in the lobby fountain at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis shake and bolted for the door. Vicki obliged Willie’s request to go outside and, in fact, banished her until it was time for bed.
• Sunday was sunny and warm - a perfect day for watching football and packing, right? I tried to run the golf course and it looked promising despite the great weather. It was not until I got back toward the clubhouse that I saw the lineup of golf carts prepared for their 10am shotgun start. I peeled off the course and did a nearby loop 3 times before going up the steep hill back to the house. Liz also got out as well, spending a good porting of the afternoon running up the monster hill on route 54 to the center of town and back! Packing and panic ensued later in the day before we finally got the car up and running at about 7:30.
That’s the update on our week. The journey begins or continues depending how you want to look at it. Our job search in Jackson is an ongoing process and we are looking forward to meeting people face to face later in the week. Now that we’ve figured out the
Beale Street
The world famous Beale Street in Memphis technical issues with posting photos (having a good internet connection is all it takes) we are playing catch-up. I posted several items to our last blog so please revisit it if you didn’t catch those images the first time around. Also, you’ll notice a few photos from Memphis in the blog even though that was covered in the last entry.
On to Denver...
