Rachel with awesome mullet
At a soccer game in Barranquilla, went to my first one my last week, Adam got robbed and engaged in hot pursuit and it was crazy fun. FedEx Clerk: We don’t accept cash for prepay items.
Me: You mean you don’t accept cash for post pay?
FedEx Clerk: No, prepay, you need a credit card or we can’t send your package. Oh, or a fedex account.
Me: Can I set one of those up without a credit card?
FedEx Clerk: No.
I used to believe that credit cards represented an amount of actual money/cash/legal tender that we had or would have in the future but apparently I was wrong. Cash is now a poor and not universally accepted representation of one’s credit cards. Don’t think this is just FedEx. KU accepts cash for pretty much nothing, even the machine where you insert cash to put it on the much more widely accepted KU ID/Debit card is dusty from lack of use. I tried to order a transcript, $10.00, a ridiculous sum of money for anyone to carry in cash. Luckily they don’t accept cash anyways for transcripts now. Nor can you order them in person after October. The guy working doesn’t like to let people do it in person now, and sent me across the street to the computer lab to do it online. I went to the

I inexplicably found my name spray-painted on the sidewalk in Barranquilla. I have never, in four years met anyone who shared my name, so I decided to take a picture with it. Kansas Bureau of Investigation to get my criminal records check for my Korean visa. They no longer give out certified criminal records checks, which you can only get for yourself I might add, to you in person. Should you show up and make the request in person, they will give you the form and tell you to mail it in,
to the office you standing in. How they know it is you requesting the document if you have to mail in the form I don’t know. The US Post office has lost not one, but two packages of concern since I’ve been back. I mailed one at the post office to Adam in Chicago. Three weeks later, still hasn’t arrived. The afore-mentioned criminal background check was mailed to me on June 30th, two and a half weeks later, still hasn’t arrived. This again, is probably my fault. If this happened in Colombia, it would be par for the course but I had somehow expected something akin to competence here in the US. It’s that expectation that’s getting me worked up, without it I would just assume that everything that goes in the mail is going to be lost and I

I stole this picture off facebook, so the part next to it are Julie's legs. won’t be able to pay for anything even when I have the money. That being said, I remember the great things about the US having spent some time here again. It’s nice to see everyone again, I won’t list them all because then the people I didn’t list will know that I wasn’t happy to see them. I will mention that it worked out perfect that I didn’t have to see Tim Healy who left right before I got here. The KU gym is free and excellent. The food is very diverse. Midwesterners are honest to God
really nice people. Always a hello and a smile which may not seem like much but very much is. Lawrence has an overwhelming energy of self-improvement, be it artistically, scholarly, physically, whatever. Tap water is drinkable and free. The internet is amazingly fast. There’s candy everywhere. Okay back to the bad things. Vegetables are out of control expensive, and this is the Midwest. People seriously need to simmer down now on the air conditioning. I can’t spend more than two hours in the library without going outside to warm up. People are
fat. Walk into Wal-Mart behind a lady, who is fully capable

Pretty self explanatory of self locomotion if strained by the effort of shuffling her girth to someplace that sells food. She immediately gets a motorized cart as to avoid that strenuous pastime of slowly meandering. Anyways, other than trying to be productive and finish my thesis which currently looks very plausible, I have: Gone to a Royals game, spent some time with old friends, been to Springfield twice, gone to Silver Dollar City, been spelunking twice, picked 7 pounds of blueberries (which Mark subsequently stole, my niece is eating healthy at least), seen a 3D movie with vibrating seats (Up), slept on a lot of couches, been reminded of how dirty maidless college students live, freestyle rapped my socks off on the streets of Kansas City, failed to win the Powerball (twice), gotten a little fatter, played in the Jackie Nalley Memorial Family golf tournament, mooned my sister, shot my first handgun (very American, on 4th of July no less) and spent (not enough) time with my nieces, one of whom likes me and one who quite clearly does not, the latter probably showing better judgment concerning men.
Recent good book: Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz is amazing,
you kind of have to speak Spanish and like comic books to enjoy it, but apparently the Pulitzer judges do as it won last year.
Recent good movie: Seen a lot, The Hangover and Step Brothers are both great, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist I enjoyed, the soundtrack is great, Basketball Diaries made me want to kill myself.
Recent good times: Christine’s UFC 100 bash, tailgating before the Royals game, freestyle rapping on the streets of KC.
Recent good album: Owl City sounds like Postal Service if a bit more saccharine, Rise Against reminds me of old school Bad Religion, also Mew, Stellastar and We Are Scientists.
I am BACK, and you know it!,
