Mining brick in Biloxi Day 1: Monday : Word of the Day: Dirt
Our first workday started when the lights in our sleeping rooms came on at 6:00 am. After the initial shock of the early hour, we went to breakfast (Biscuits and Gravy plus scrambled eggs) and got prepared for our day.
We then drove to our worksite in Biloxi. The quickest way to get from Ocean Springs to Biloxi is across a bridge that was rebuilt after the hurricane. The bridge has a great view that we have yet to become tired of. The house we are working at is just a few blocks from the main coast and the casinos in Biloxi.
After a brief tour of the building, we got our assignments and started working. One group consisting of Morgan, Scott, Kelly, Susan and some AmeriCorps workers started leveling an area at the back and along the side of the structure. Another group, Zan, Matt, Asel, Kevin and Katelyn, worked in the front of the house. The group in the front was told there were some bricks buried in the dirt. These foundation bricks were buried as house movers moved the building from one side of the street

Miss Kay says: "I need the hill leveled, and there might be a few bricks buried in it too." to the other side. There were more than a few bricks in the mound; in fact, we think there were more bricks than dirt in that dirt pile! We salvaged many of the bricks because the people who operate the house told us they wanted to build a small courtyard. Once we got all of the bricks out of the ground, we leveled the dirt on the front side of the house.
We then started to build the courtyard on the back of the house. While some people laid sand, landscape fabric, and bricks, another group of people cleaned and scraped bricks so they would fit in the pattern. We left the tools and materials for tomorrow, and headed back to Camp Victor. After hot showers, we had a Saint Patrick’s Day meal of 'Shepherds’ Pie, sweet potatoes, and green frosted peanut butter cake.
Day 2 : Words of the Day: Bricks and Sand
We continued our work from yesterday at the historical building, with the addition of Brian, who joined our project since he didn’t have a team to work with. A dump truck arrived with more sand promptly at 8:00 a.m. and the brick laying
Cleaning Bricks
We made a patio out of the bricks that we dug up, and few more, the constant comment was: "Do you think we going to have enough brick's?" began. Zan and Susan laid a row of bricks while the master brick layer Scott laid another. Matt and Kelly prepared for the brick layers by leveling out the sand ahead of them. Matt’s sand stamping dance was Broadway worthy! The rest of the team worked diligently to clean off bricks and get them to the brick layers. It was a challenge to keep ahead of Scott with bricks. Morgan and Brian kept us entertained with their fake southern accents that they kept going all afternoon. Our work day ended with the brick patio unfinished, after started to run out of usable bricks we were forced to dig through the entire pile of bricks. Since we expect rain tonight and tomorrow morning, we hope to help around camp victor in the morning and head back tomorrow afternoon to finish laying one more row of bricks and finish of the patio. Well… it’s almost time for our supper of enchaladas, so hasta luego!
