Notice the rubber on the wheel?
Typically they can't use rubber tires, but in this case it is needed for traction, so the tread is attached to the wheel on the side of the drive system of the baler. We are at the end of this project, and like the end of all of them, at this point it feels like it just rushed to this day. We’ve been waiting and waiting for the day when we’d get to go home and see the kids (read: grandkids!) and then all of a sudden it’s tomorrow, and there are things that we didn’t get done, or didn’t get to do yet. But the main thing is that tomorrow we’re leaving, and heading home!
The men have finished the floor, except for grouting the last little bit. They laid nearly 5000 six inch tiles. If you’re keeping track, that’s 24 days of them on their knees…and those knees are complaining! But the floor looks wonderful, and the camp director is so pleased with it.
The women finished painting the houses, the dining room, the floor in the game room, and even had time to paint the lower section of the walls of the men’s and women’s restrooms in the dining hall. “Have paint roller; paint fast.”
We had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend; my sister and niece (hi, Avo & Katie!) came from New York. Our weather
Doing farm worK
Amish style. The girl driving the team looked to be about six years old. was perfect…no wind, no rain, everything so lush and green. We drove over to the Amish country and did some shopping, some eating, and lots of picture taking. The picture taking always makes me uncomfortable, because I feel like I’m taking pictures of a handicapped person, or some situation that I shouldn’t be interested in…does that make sense? I know that it doesn’t offend the Amish society, as long as the pictures aren’t close-ups, and I am interested, so I took pictures. There’s much about their lifestyle that I admire, but also much that I don’t.
Anyway, it was fun. Then on Memorial Day Avo went home, and Fred & Rosi, Henry & Ann, and Bob & I rented a pontoon on Atwater Lake. We only had it for a couple hours, and we all wish we’d rented it for the whole day. It was so much relaxing and enjoyable.
We left Canaan Acres about noon Thursday, and intended to drive for a few hours, but instead we drove nearly half way! Bob was concerned about driving through Chicago, and at one time his plan was to wait and go through in the middle of the night! Instead, he
Ohio at its finest!
There are miles and miles and miles of rolling hills and tidy looking farmhouses. chose a road that went south of Chicago~~it added some miles, but relieved some stress, so I figure it was a good payoff! We got on Highway 80, which is a toll road; you collect a ticket when you get on, and then apparently are charged when you get off. That gave me about 180 miles to wonder how much they were going to charge us with our four axels…it was $15. We stayed on 80, got to Indiana, and they decided to charge us again: that was about 150 miles, and the toll was $22. It just gets more and more fun! If you’re not familiar with tollways, just because you’re charged to drive on them doesn’t mean they’re worth driving on~~bump bump bump as we drove over the patched potholes!
Friday we had a light traffic and good conditions (minus the constant wind!) and we
got to our daughter's home in Mankato, MN about dinnertime~~half a day earlier than we'd expected! Everyone’s great, and the kids have grown, and we’re thrilled to be home-ish!!
This summer we will be staying with Jean in Dickinson, North Dakota again. Last summer she and Bob built the new dog
kennels, and this summer they're going to remodel the old ones so Jean can board (and train) more dogs. In June we will go visit our other daughters, friends and family, and then we have our family reunion, so it will be well into June before we settle in Dickinson. We'll be there until the end of August when we leave for another year on the road; this fall to Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. But I don't want to talk about that yet. For now we're hugging little arms that we haven't seen for such a long time!
I will continue to write, as I have things to share, and hopefully it will be more often than it has this past month. The travelblog site was updating their server, and that caused some of the problems I struggled with the past few weeks. Now it's up and running great and you will be hearing from me! I wish you all a relaxing, refreshing summer, filled with family, laughter and love.
