Biking Cheboygan, Michigan’s North Central State Trail Text and Photos last updated: 2015
Number of times on this trail: 2 Location: Indian River to Mackinaw City
Distance: 55 km (34 miles)
Distance markers: miles
Surface: crushed limestone
Width: 3 metres
Grade: Mostly flat
This is a crushed limestone trail. In some places it is very firm and in others it can be very sandy.
A hybrid or mountain bike would be perfect but a street bike would find it difficult, in places
Indian River is a good place to start this trail.
The 28 km between Indian River and Cheboygan runs along the western shore of Mullet Lake past cottages and nice views of the lake.
The last 10 km to Cheboygan pass through a fairly dense woodland with some views of open fields.
At Topinabee Lakeside park there are rest rooms, water and parking.
In Cheboygan there is a new trailhead with lots of parking for cars and trailers.
The trailhead also connects with the North Eastern State Trail from Alpena.
This trailhead is just a
few blocks from downtown and is worth a side trip.
By the way the Best Western has one of the best locations overlooking the river with
real balconies and screened doors. It is about 500 metres from the trailhead.
From Cheboygan to Mackinaw City the trail runs parallel to highway 23 through heavily
wooded forest.
Mackinaw City also has a new trailhead near downtown shopping area and just a few
blocks from the famous Mackinaw bridge and ferries to Mackinac Island.
