Plymouth rock - see the cut in it? Tuesday
We start our day at the Dunkin Donuts across the street. It was large so we thought that it would be a sit down place but Noooo. We ordered our food and went back to the hotel to eat. None of us were happy with our order but Pam’s was the worst. She ordered a wrap, but that was the most pitiful wrap I had ever seen. When she put her hand in to grab it, she thought the bag was actually empty. We agreed no more Dunkin Donuts.
Our first stop was Plymouth Rock. The rock was much smaller than we thought and we read that part of it was in other locations but it looked whole except for the cut thru the middle of it and it looked like they had cemented it back together. Later we found out that yes, part of the rock was missing but it wasn’t the sides, it was the bottom. We saw the top of the rock… The other fact that we thought was interesting was that the Mayflower was rented. We saw a replica of the Mayflower – how did 109 people survive on that for 66 days?

Sunset in Gloucester After Plymouth, we headed into Boston. We had decided to do the Hop On – Hop Off tour. Susan found that we could join it at the convention center- Westin. We parked our car at the hotel and jumped on the shuttle. We took this shuttle to the main hub and bought our tickets. Well we hopped on and didn’t hop off the whole time. Boston was very crowded and very much under construction so we decided to just ride the tour. We were afraid that if we got off, we would never find another hop on/off that had 5 seats. During the tour we saw the Tea Party area, The USS Constitution (wooden battle ship), MIT, the exterior of the Cheers bar, old grave yards, Fenway Park, where the Declaration was signed and read, Boston Commons and much more. During the time in Boston we also drove thru the Big Dig (major highways placed underground) and the widest stayed cable bridge ( Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge).
We learned many interesting facts like the battle of Bunker Hill battle didn’t take place on Bunker Hill but on another hill, that we could have been part of Finland as

Ship on the water in Salem they believe Leif Erickson was in the area as they have found many artifacts from his time period. … Who would have thought, we might have spoken Finnish if things had been different.
We liked Boston but with the construction and traffic, we decided the rest of our trip – going thru small towns- was what we really liked. After Boston, we moved off the main roads to the little highways. We saw wonderful houses, little towns and just beautiful small town/rural living. All the churches had clocks on their steeples. We decided it was to make sure everyone got to church on time. Of course we also saw lots of light houses. Yes, they need lots of light houses here as the coast is rough and rocky.
Eventually we get to Salem. Unfortunately we arrive after the museum and attractions closed, but the town was very quant. Pam googled and found a wonderful restaurant in the Harthorne Hotel. Our dinner was wonderful and they had just changed their menu for their 90
th anniversary dinner. We enjoyed our waiter Cody who was a student studying hotel and restaurant manager – he will go far. After dinner, we drove

Dinner picture with the gang around town more and found the “House of Seven Gables”. This town and Hotel also had a lot of “Betwitch” history as several episodes where filmed there and the cast stayed in the Harthorne Hotel.
The last town we saw before heading to our hotel was Gloucester. You can see the scenes you recognize from - Gordons of Gloucester. Gloucester is a blue collar working class town with small houses right up on the water. These probably weren’t that small but after the large houses from yesterday –well. The coast is VERY rocky so we all understand how the perfect storm happened. We ended the day with a lovely sunset over the Gloucester Bay and then a short drive to our hotel in Portsmouth NH.
