JFK Museum
I almost made it inside. The local weather channels had been warning all week that we'd have severe thuderstorms Thursday. So I saved all of the indoor activities I wanted to do until today.
I really wanted to window shop at
Mashpee Commons a large outdoor mall with lots of interesting boutiques. I figured if it was raining too hard, I could just duck into another store. I also knew that my children would not want to participate in such an activity. Conveniently, the
Cape Cod Children's Museum (www.capecodchildrensmuseum.org) is also located in Mashpee. So my husband dropped me off at the Commons and took the kids to the Children's Museum to run off some energy.
The kids really seemed to enjoy it. I asked my husband if he thought it was worth the cost of admission ($6 for adults and kids over 5, and $5 for younger children). He responded with an enthusiastic yes. He said there were several areas set up where the children could engage in dramatic play; a post office, a pizzeria, a train, a boat, Wampanoag Indian home, and much more. My husband wants me to tell you that it was air conditioned and there was adequate seating available
for parents in all areas (I'm guessing he took full advantage of that). My son wants me to add that there was also a boy there who wasn't sharing, but my guess is you probably won't run into him
on your trip. They spent a good two hours there running around.
Meanwhile in Mashpee Commons, I was having a ball window shopping. There was a really neat place there called
Color Me Mine which is a paint your own pottery studio. I couldn't help but think it would make a great rainy day activity for kids on the Cape. They charge a studio fee ($6 for kids 5 and under, $8 for kids 6-13, $10 for ages 14+) and they also charge for the actual piece of pottery you paint. After you paint it, they will glaze it for you and you can pick it up when it's done. I took a peek at the prices of pottery and noticed dessert sized plates start at $10. "Wacky Wednesdays" are from 5-9pm and all studio fees are waived.
Something else we did today was take the
Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory Tour (www.capecodchips.com). I am a little hesitant to even mention this activity because I'm sure you'll think I'm a dork. A friend of mine from work said she took the tour on her trip to Cape Cod and enjoyed it. So since it was free I thought I'd give it a try. There seemed to be a lot of families with children the same age as mine going into building. What I couldn't see from the entrance is how fast these families were exiting. Seriously, this activity didn't take even five minutes. It consists of you walking past 6 or 7 windows to view various stages of the potato chip production process. Each window has a colorful sign explaining what's happening. At the end of the tour you get a snack size bag of chips (which really aren't that great, in my opinion). This activity is not good for small children because there is too much reading and the windows were too high for my four year old to see clearly. My husband actually enjoyed the tour and said he learned something. Ok, now maybe you think he's the dork.
After that we headed back towards Hyannis because I really wanted to see the
JFK Museum (www.jfkhyannismuseum.org). The kids fell asleep in the car and my husband parked and said he wanted to take a nap too. So I was on my own again. I did get to see the museum, I even took a picture of it from the outside. I had every intention of going in....but then I noticed the scrapbook store across the street.
Colorful Creations (www.colorfulcreations.net) sells scrapbook and stamping supplies. I was thrilled to see they carry their own line of Cape Cod themed paper that you won't be able to find anywhere else. I spent so long in that store that when I finally came out, the JFK Museum was closed! I've decided to get up early tomorrow and run down there first thing so I can see it.
After our long morning out, we returned home around sunset. So far, the weatherman has been wrong and we've had no rain or thunderstorms. This evening we took a walk on Craigville Beach as a family and picked up sea shells. I can't believe our vacation is winding down already. Only two more nights left.
