Public Gardens.
Small park at the end of Newbury Street, just before Boston Common. Well, last day in Boston today. Feeling more relaxed about the whole trip and move to Australia now that we are getting used to the idea. We'll feel like seasoned travellers once we arrive in Melbourne.
The weather in Boston could not have been better. Clear blue skies all day, every day. Temperatures slowly rising to high 20's low 30's by about 5pm, then hovering around mid 20's all evening. Lovely. I am starting to lose my blue English hue and beginning to sport a rather nifty T-Shirt tan.
Boston weather has been pretty much perfect, New York may be another story - could be 8 - 10 degrees warmer and a damn sight stickier.
Walked our feet off again today, it's all good training for what’s to come. Made a pact to always take the stairs instead of a lift or escalators in a small effort to 'train' for the hike.
Took the tube to Harvard this morning and spent a few hours wandering around the campus and surrounds. Took the tube back to the Arts district and visited the
Isabelle Gardner Museum which was reasonably interesting, ( Emma’s favourite part of the day ), we came across
Mr Encyclopaedia America in there who was able to regale stories to his family about every piece of art and artefact in the place, God only knows if any of it were true or if he was talking complete rubbish, but he said it with enough conviction and obligatory American volume to make it all sound like fact. From there we walked to Boston Fens, a small park and pond which had wild turtles in. We walked around the Fens and up to
Fenway Park where the Red Sox play. There was a game on tonight so loads of people milling around waiting to catch a glimpse of the players as they arrive. One of the hot-dog vendors was busy chastising an employee for wearing a Yankees t-shirt. We walked around the outside of the stadium, damn ugly place - bloody ENOURMOUS! It would have been great to get inside for a look, but no go as they were readying the place for the game.
We walked back toward Newbury St from there, with a detour to the Esplanade. We walked along the water’s edge admiring the many bronzing bodies laid in the grass and on the jetties, ( I
say admiring - some may call it perving ). They certainly know how to look after themselves round here, Boston certainly does not suffer from the American obese stereotype.
At this rate our boots will be worn out before we even get to the start of the Inca Trail.
A quick stop at the digs for a shower and change before heading out for dinner. In an attempt to keep the budget small, ( and save our waistlines ), we skipped starters and headed straight for mains in a lovely restaurant called Stephanie’s. Newbury Street seems to be the place to eat, everywhere is packed. We were lucky to get in just before the queues started again. Anyway, Em had a beef salad - which was basically a huge piece of fillet steak atop a nice salad and I had the house special burger - superb. Stuffed now though.
There are not many places to go once you have had dinner though, it's way too expensive to drink n the bars, so we are sat in a coffee shop at the moment, Em with her book an me typing this up. Coffee is nice as well.
Cheers
Apparently, this Cheers was the inspiration for the TV series. So, that about wraps up Boston. Up early to pack tomorrow and maybe relax for an hour on Boston Common before we head for the bus to New York.
That was good timing - this place is closing now, there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to go around here after 9pm. It’s no wonder they all eat really late, they must just stay in the restaurants.
Right, just got back to the digs. All the restaurants were packed all the way up Newbury Street. We just could not find anywhere to go just to sit and chill out. It’s no wonder people are just sat around in the street, on the steps of shops and guest houses.
Overall, Boston was a great place to visit, but we think the two days was enough. There really isn’t that much to see. There are a lot of homeless around, mainly harmless - very few actually begging. One guy had a large placard round his neck which read, “spare change wanted for weed and Heineken” - at least he’s honest. The flip side is the amount of money dripping out of the place. I have never seen so many Hummers,
Old City Hall?
Think this was old city hall - can't remember. some of the SUV’s are frankly immense.
Well, don't know when we will get internet access again, so see you for now....
