10,000 cyclists walk into a bar and order up a beer…they call it Ragbrai.

For the young and those other souls so inclined, drinking beer is only a close second to riding their bike. As Steve says, we’re a drinking team with a cycling habit. Angola to Clear Lake ran about 67 miles, a few more than the advertized 59, but who’s counting when you’re hot and tired. High today 89 with a heat index of 101. Thankfully the roads are nearly flat. Drank a lot of Gaterade. Pork chop, not so much. We were not allowed to camp where we were originally assigned so we ended up along the side of a big warehouse in an industrial park. No one said Ragbrai was a series of 4 star resorts. Clear Lake is the sight of the Surf Ballroom. It is best known as the last place Buddy Holly played before dying along with Richie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in the crash of their small chartered plane the night of February 3, 1959. A date immortalized by Don McLean in “American Pie” as the day the music died. The town is a beautiful

old resort town with lakeshore cottages and mansions. There is a very nice city park downtown with a band shell. We were treated to two bands, first a Jimmy Buffett cover band and then The Spin Doctors. The other excitement came in the form of a thunderstorm that blew through about 11:30. My tent stayed intact and the balance of the night was uneventful.
