Bluffton
Cool building name, though they spelled it wrong... I stayed in Bluffton for a couple days, enough to hang out and catch up a little bit. Annie showed me around Bluffton’s campus, which I had never seen before. I watched the women’s soccer game against Goshen, and was quite impressed with Goshen’s team! Early on in the game Bluffton scored one goal and going into the second half the score was 1-0 Bluffton. Goshen pulled through with 4 goals that half, and won the game 4-1! I think I picked a great game to watch. This was Goshen’s first game of the season, and from what I saw everyone worked very well together including the new girls on the team. During the game I hung out with a few of Trisha’s friends that drove over to watch the game. Ben was included in this group, and it was awesome seeing him again.
The next morning I headed toward Goshen, and met Layne Wyse about half way there. He drove down from Michigan, and we stopped to chat and have coffee together. It was great seeing him again; I miss some of the Hesston C-mod guys quite a bit with Layne being one of them.

Trish in action out to be a lot of fun! I arrived Thursday afternoon, and the first thing I did was meet up with Trish, Ben, and Scott Hochstetler who were playing some ping pong. I played Ben after his match with Scott, and Ben destroyed me again as usual. But it is still fun nonetheless. After ping pong we went and played some sand volleyball, and that was way too much fun too. We had 3 on 3, and it was a pretty even match. After vball we went over to the Kauffman’s house for dinner. I didn’t know these folks, but Trish and Ben are friends with their kids and the parents. They have a dog that gets excited very easily and pees on the floor, so we had to be careful on what we did to the dog. After dinner we went to see where Trish lives and met some of her friends. Ok I met a lot of her friends, and there was no way I was going to remember all of their names the first time! After some hanging out at Trisha’s place then hanging out at the guys house I was ready for bed.
Yesterday I did yoga in the morning at the Kauffman’s, with Krista as our instructor. Jordan and Ben were there too, and for some reason I committed to this event the night before. I had no idea what I was getting into, but it was a good exposure to yoga. It was SO muggy that morning from the rain the night before, and as you can imagine the sweat was just pouring off of me. What we did there was in no way related to what I thought I was getting into, it was way harder! I now have more respect for those who do yoga, and I know for a fact that I don’t ever want to do it again. Right now I am feeling the effects from the workout, even over a day later. My body just hurts.
In the afternoon we played some disc golf, and I destroyed Ben. I don’t mind saying that after what happened in our ping pong match. I actually beat everyone else too, it was awesome. We just played around campus and aimed for different stationary objects. Overall there were a few extra dings on some nearby cars, but there wasn’t any extreme damage done. Last night we were over at the Kauffman’s again for dinner.
This morning Trish and I went out for coffee and breakfast just by ourselves, and it was great! It was nice to have some time alone with her to catch up a bit. She has been very busy since I have been here, and I knew that would happen from the start. So any time we have by ourselves is awesome. We ate at a little local diner, and the cost for the amount and quality of food is one of the best that I have seen. Very good food, and very reasonable pricing. After breakfast we went to look for a bike for Trish. We checked at a couple local places, but had no luck. There was a guy we saw at 2 of the places that came up and talked to us. He asked about our bike search, and directed us to the bikes he has at his house out in the country. He said just go and take one if we like one of them, and settle up later on the price. This was a very trusting guy, pretty cool. So we went out there and chose a bike, and about that time the guy comes back to his house. He says just to take the bike, and in return just buy him some tubes for repairing bike tires. The price tag said $40, but I think Trish got a great deal! It is nothing fancy, just functional and practical.
This afternoon I went with Rob Steurey on their boat. Rob’s family owns a local company that designs and manufactures higher-end seats for the boating industry. They used to make boats up until the late 70’s, but do not manufacture them any more. The boat we took on the lake was a boat made by their company in the 70’s. The boat looked older, but was in good shape and was a lot of fun! We drove around the lakes for a couple hours, these lakes are all connected with a canal. We stopped so that I could try water skiing, but when we tried to start the boat’s engine it would not start. We flagged some people down, and they gave us a tow back to the boat launch. It was a funny experience, something to add to my list of stories. I guess the Steurey’s don’t make boats like they used too! Just kidding, the boats are made really well and in our case it was the engine that had some charging issues. This is out of the control of the Steury’s. The Steury’s live in a beautiful house in the middle of farm country, and today I finally understood why Rob still lives at home.
Tonight I went to the soccer games on campus; they were scrimmages against the teams at Goshen. Honestly I didn’t watch much of the games because I was busy talking and catching up with people. The first person I saw was Jeff Baumgartner, my math professor from Hesston. I talked to him quite a while about what I have been up to and what my plans for the future are. He even asked me if I wanted to speak to the calculus class when I come through Hesston, and I said of course! I am exactly sure what I will talk about, but it will be along the lines of how Hesston prepared me for the transfer to OSU and getting my engineering degree. Some of the other people I saw and talked to were Eric Martin, Leon and Wanda Heyerly, Mark Histand, and my stalker Kayla Miller. Yes Kayla you get public recognition for knowing the agenda of my trip better than I do!
I get a weird feeling sometimes when I am in Goshen. I don’t want to talk bad about the town, just some simple observations. Very liberal people, lots of hippies, and just a very different feeling than what I am used to.
I guess this length of entry is what I get for putting off blogging for so long. Some of you might be worried about my well-being since I haven’t posted in a while, but I am still alive and well. I am also throwing around some travel options for the near future. The guy I met at the dragon is considering riding down to Panama soon, and I am considering it too. It would be a totally different experience than this one, but I think it would still be a lot of fun. I am also considering trying to get over to Europe soon. But if I am limited by funds I might just have to start a regular job. Scary huh?
Ok I am tired from running around and playing hard all day.
