HI ALL.
well hawaii seems to keep getting better and better. We've done quite a lot this past week, and the time has flown by, with only 4 days left together.
About 5 days ago we did a bus tour that took us around the whole island in one day, seeing all of the sights and visiting pearl harbor, the famous US naval base bombed by the japanese in WW2. The coach picked us up at 6a.m from sandi and al's hotel, so me and soph slept the night on the pull out sofa bed in their room. thankfully sandi kept her snoring to a minimum!!!!! The first stop was pearl harbor, just outside of honolulu. It was unreal!!!! They had a museum there, and a memorial out in the harbor, over the top of the sunken war ship, Arizona. We had a boat trip out to the memorial, and we got to see the sunken wreck and pay our respects. it was a really eary place, and it was sad to think of the 1172 men that went down with ship on that famous day. The memorial had all of the names of the lost men, and many
other names had been added to the list. when survivors of the day had finally passed away years later, they had been buried down with their shipmates. The wreck slowly leaks oil from its hull, over 60 years after it was sunk, and its strange to see these specks of oil apear evry now and then. Its said to be the tear drops of the men below!!!! We got to see a video about the attacks etc, and it was a very educational, and sad trip.
Next we went up the west coast, visiting a pineapple farm on the way to the north shore. In winter the north shore is battered with 30 foot waves, but in summer its dead calm. Famous surf breaks like Wiamea and Pipeline are here. We saw all of the bueatiful beaches and they were lovely, but it would have been nice to see some big waves. We stopped at a great beach called sunset beach, and took a look around etc. The next stop was a picturesc point on the north east. it was all very pretty and it was great to be seeing the real hawaii, away from the crouds of honolulu
and waikiki. We then travelled down the east coast and had lunch on a golf course club house and followed that with a drive up to a wonderful lookout. the views were awesome, but the wind was so strong that i nearly got blown off my crutches!!!! you can see the strenght of the wind from the photo of sharon and sandi, looking lovely, ha ha. we had a lot of funny photos of us all looking windswept.
A stop at a nut farm was really nice, and we had lots of free samples. They were so nice that no one left without buying a few bags of honey, coconut or cinnomen nuts. On the way around the south we stopped at a great beach were the surf was dumping straight on the beach. loads of kids and men were surfing and body surfing the big waves and getting a beating onto the beach!!! it was great to watch, but looked to painful to do, especially with the broken foot!!! Our driver said there was at least one fatallity a year from broken necks etc. mad. Finally was a stop at hanauma bay, and diamond head, two great look
outs and pretty days. We all loved the day and got to see so many lovely things, and great places.
2 days later we returned to hanuama bay for a day on the beach and lots of snorkelling. We weather has been perfect here the whole time. clear blue skys, some cloudy times, but the clouds are a welcomed relief from the intence sunshine. The bay was so gorgous, and the snorkelling was ok. It was dissapointing after being on the barrier reef, but we saw some big colourful fish. Again it was a great day, and we all had fun.
Apart from that we've just hit the beach, hit the pool, hit the shops, and absolutely smashed the food. God the americans know how to eat. all of the restuarants have been superb. we haven't had a bad meal, and every night we have to redo our top 3 places we have eaten, as each restuarant is better than the last. I swear we've all put on wieght. We ate at a cool restuarant the other night called "bubba gumps". the character from forest gump, the shrimp guy. the theme restuarant decor was great and the shrimps
were amazing. The food has been faultless.
We've done a fair bit of shopping to, as it literally is half the price of england. all quiksilver t-shirts are only 10 pounds instead of 22 pound etc. all trainers are 27 pound instead of 60. its class, but dangerous, ha ha ha. especially with sophie as a girlfriend, she wants a fendi handbag that costs 1000 pounds. NO WAY!!!!!!!!
we'll gotta shout, sophs waiting for me down at the pool. Im sure iv forgotten a lot, but sandi, al, shar and john will fill you in when they come home. We've all had great fun, and its been lovely to be together.
love mart and soph xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
