Day 8
We were up early again as we were headed to Maui and it was a 2 hour drive to the airport. A quick brekky of Spam again and we left our treehouse sanctuary behind. We only wanted the one quick stop on the way which was at Rainbow Falls. A 24 ft waterfall flowing over a lava cave that when the sun hit it created rainbows.. magical!! Kym saw some people on the rocks above the falls and wanted to get closer. So in my thongs I climbed over rocks that had water flowing next to them to get to the falls for that perfect picture. It was spectacular to see so close.
Our next part of the journey wasn't so good. We thought we had enough fuel to get us to the next gas station, the problem was there were no gas stations for an hour and a half. We were totally screwed. Pulling over at some hill that had a few cars parked we asked the other tourists there if they had any gas. A lovely couple offered us some of theirs if we had a garden hose... hmm well its not something you normally
carry. We asked other people but no luck. I even tried to use my snorkel to siphon gas but it was too wide.
I have to say that even in the face of adversity we both remained relatively calm and optimistic. When I think about running out of gas and being stranded in the middle of nowhere the person I would want to be with would be Kym. That's LOVE right there. No fighting, just a "ok we have a challenge, what now" kind of attitude, "we can't change what's happened so let's not dwell on it and let's figure this out together". I love this dude, my husband.
We were blessed that day. The couple that offered us a couple of gallons of siphoned gas also offered us a lift to the gas station.. 20 plus miles away. Although it seemed like something was out to get us as the first gas station we arrived at was under renovation and we needed to travel another 20 minutes to the next station both of us remained calm. The couple that were so amazingly kind to take us to get gas were from Buffalo NY and were so friendly,
we couldn't ask for a nicer couple to be stranded with for the 2 hours it took. There are reasons for eveything and sometimes it isn't clear what those reasons are but I know that there was a lesson there (maybe fueling up or researching...) but what it did show us was faith in humanity. People want to help and I hope that we can pay it forward ourselves...
Rescheduling our flight we eventually made it to Maui. A short 30 minute flight and a quick cab ride to our next accommodation; a hostel (backpackers). Funky looking hippish vibe greeted us with brightly coloured buildings, paintings onto surfboards and a relaxed, chilled vibe and a couple of hostel cats that liked licking cane toads and tripping out and we felt like a pair of older hippies. We arrived on keg night so from 6pm we drank beer and dined on hot tamales (not the candy version). Probably the worst thing we have ever eaten but still we laughed about our choice of meal, drowned it in cheap beer and retired early for the busy day ahead the next day.
