Jekyll Island Club Hotel
This was where the rich people came for their summer holidays!Saturday now and none of us can believe that our first week here is almost over! The weather continues to be great. Not hot but certainly very pleasant for wandering around in, and quite a bit of sunshine.
Yesterday we went to Jekyll Island, which is a lot different to Saint Simons. Jekyll is where the Rockerfeller's spent their summers in what they call "cottages". These "cottages" are about 4000sq ft. and, of course, beautiful. The Island is only about 40 mins from here so we'll go back and take the tour of all the old homes and museum in the historic district. The rest of the Island is mostly beaches and parks, somewhat like Prince Edward Island. It's lovely, but we are very happy that we chose Saint Simons (sheer luck and a bit of research). I think we'd only last a couple of days on Jekyll and then we'd be looking for things to do, and that's really saying something coming from the Sunshine Coast! They have this really neat event, in Jan and Feb, where they hide these beautiful glass globes (much like the old fishing floats, only in amazing colours). If you find one, you get
Rockerfeller Cottage
The Rockerfeller's found the hotel too crowded so they built this next door! to keep it. We didn't have any luck, however, Margaret did happen to "find" a very pretty blue one in the visitors centre for purchase, which she did. It's beautiful!
