This entry will be a combination entry from 2 different trips.
May 2006: World of Coca-Cola / Olympic Park
January 7, 2007: Georgia Aquarium / The Varsity / Random Atlanta Pictures.
...and so I begin, with the recent trip being the first I will talk about!
The Georgia Aquarium is an AMAZING facility! There are touch pools where you can get 'hands on' with Sting Rays, Shrimp, StarFish, and other critters. (I declined on touching the shrimp... that's just gross!) There are areas where you can watch sea otters and sea lions at play. You can stick your head into a dome in the penguin exibit. Not to mention Beluga whales! There are currently 3... one passed away last week unfortunately. (It had been rescued from unfavorable conditions as a part of a theme park in Mexico, but never fully recovered.) You can watch Jelly fish, have staring contests with giant Groupers, watch a hammerhead shark swim in a gigantic tank with numerous other species, or peek into numerous little bubbles along the way for glimspes at Sea Horses among a few possibilities. Then there's the eels, octopus... etc, etc, etc! I was pleased to see little play areas for
children, as well as places adults could crawl through to get unique perspectives and picture opportunities! I was dissappointed that there weren't any dolphins though, perhaps they are planned for the future.
I also took some other pictures along the way in the areas around the aquarium. It was a rainy day, but it was neat to see the clouds in low around the buildings. It helped me to appreciate that something doesn't have to be full of sunshine to be considered beautiful.
We also made a stop at
The Varsity which is famous for it's hot dogs and 'What'll ya have?"...plus there's always an abundance of those little red paper caps that they are probably just as equally famous for! Chris had never been before, so he was in awe of how big the place was.
Going back in time...
The visit to the
World of Coca-Cola was very interesting. You can sample coke products from around the world... all are good, except for a particular one from Italy. (I never heard of it when I lived there, after tasting it, it doesn't suprise me!!) I believe the name was "Beverly" but I might have them confused.
Other parts of the World of Coke included displays from all their advertising campaigns throughout the decades. Having studied sociology, it was very fascinating to me to see the changes in trends.
The
Centennial Olympic Park is a great place to go to kickback and relax. I've seen concerts on the lawn in the past before as well. The walkways are paved with bricks with names on them from donations - something that I wish I had done because they are gridded to make finding your own brick possible. The central focus of the park, especially in warm weather, is the ring fountain. People flock to the area with the water spouting out - and soaking wet kids run around everywhere! It's alot of fun to watch.
