Saturday Blues
waiting for the mechanic Happy Birthday, Daniel! We love you.
Saturday morning Sara and Trevor were up bright and early (actually before bright, but early) reinstalling the fuel tank and hooking up fuel lines. Then, when they tried to bleed the air out of the lines, they couldn’t get fuel to the lines. This is not good. They called Bryce from West Marine, who had been such a great help the day before and he called a friend who is a Yanmar diesel guy. Unfortunately he was out of town, but said he could be here around noon on Monday. His guess was that it was the injection pump and he had replaced several lately. Bryce again came through, this time calling his ex-brother-in-law, Jan, a diesel mechanic. Jan came out, took things apart, cleaned the injection pump and other unknown parts, fixed a few unacceptable connections, and had it running like new in a couple of hours. Joy all around!
We were all so happy at this turn of events that Sara and Trevor bought ice cream at the grocery store and we ate a whole half gallon after supper.
Kerry and I were sitting around the boat in the afternoon
Sea Gulls
they would land on the roof of the marina then all take off at once for no reason we could see when a charming gent came by and asked about our boat. He asked if it was a Mini-Ship. I told him it was a Webers Cove and invited him aboard, as he was obviously wanting a look around. He told us he lived across the inlet and there used to be a boat that looked just like ours nearby. The hull was the same, the lines of the cabins the same, even the layout was the same except reversed. We had a nice time talking with him about that boat, our boat, boats in general, and what we’ll see in the next few days. Mr. Luzier, it was very nice to meet you.
There were a couple of boats in the middle of the bay just before dark with flashing lights and I thought it was the law after someone. Turns out it was the Crystal River Christmas Boat Parade getting lined up. The flashing lights were on the TowBoatUS and US Coast Guard boats, which were also decked out with Christmas lights. There were two sailboats; one with green lights like a big Christmas tree up the mast, and the other with shooting stars. There were several fishing
boats decked out with a multitude of colorful lights and a few pontoon boats decorated with lights. Christmas music was blasting from several of the boats and one pontoon boat was full of people caroling. The parade staged out in the bay in front of us, cruised downriver, then back upriver, then right in front of us before heading down another inlet. It was all quite festive with the lights, music and people dressed in Santa hats.
This morning, Sunday, we had a leisurely morning. We left the dock just before 1 pm, heading downriver, out the channel and north towards the barge channel that runs to the power plant. It was our intention to anchor near the barge channel, sheltered from the north by the jetties along the channel. Good plan, it’s fairly smooth here, with just a little wind, but the waves are blocked by the jetties. By coming outside today, we save about 2 hours, which is what it took to get here from the marina. We plan to head south from here in the morning, taking advantage of north winds and following seas at 2-3’ all the way to Anclote Key near Tarpon Springs. The
Pelican Tree
the porch at this house was pretty crowded with pelicans, too next day we’ll be in the ICW, more sheltered waters, and hauling ass towards the Keys. We hope to make up for all the delays the weather has been causing and get to Marathon on the 27th or 28th, where we’ll meet Michael and David and their families and my mother. Maybe then I’ll feel a bit more Christmas spirit.
