“ Be happy for this moment. This moment is your Life “ - Omar Kahayam
Evergreen Club This is where we stayed you might want to check it out.
We are now in Jacksonville, FL, yesterday we biked the Jacksonville/Baldwin Trail, and today we took a walk on the beach in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday.
Go Steelers
Monday, 1/19/09 we did a walk through on how to get to The Park and Ride, then the Bus to the Metro and then the Metro to DC. We got the system down and were ready for tomorrow. Monday we walked to White House then onto the Washington Monument (WM). Tickets were available for (WM) later in the day, so we picked them up and moved on to the FDR Memorial. It was our first time here and it echoed our current economic crisis but set long ago. The sculptures and quotes were moving and impressive. After walking for a long time then started back to the Washington Memorial and went to the top and had a wonderful view and got some great photos. We were interested in checking out where to be on the Big Day. We ended up at the WW II Memorial in front of
the big Jumbo tron.
We got up early and took the car to the Park and Ride. The buses were free for this special day and moving swiftly to the Metro. However, the Metro was packed, but the atmosphere was friendly and excited. We waited our turn and got stuffed into a metro car. Everyone wanted to talk and hear "Where are you from?" The Metro was packed, and there were many, many delays. It was a struggle to see how many people could be crammed into each metro car. At times all the people on the train were chanting..."Obama...Obama!!" We were among many happy people, walking to The Mall, with thousands of our “new best” friends. It was difficult choice, but we decided to take a place at the WWII Memorial in front of a Jumbo tron. The day was cold, so we took turns walking just to keep the blood circulating. As the morning wore on, more and more people arrived.
It is hard to describe so many people gathered from so many different places. During this time the Jumbo tron was running the concert from Sunday Evening. We got to know people next to us.
I guess the best was an older African American man who was a chief and did Bar B Q's. His claim to fame was… he did a big Bar B Que in Pittsburgh. But the even more interesting (he was from DC) and had attended the Martin Luther King March in ‘63. He was very interesting. Kel marched after LMK was killed, 1968, she was in training to teach in Newark, NJ. It was a turbulent time. Everyone had their story and wanted to share their reason for coming. Considering the vast number of people yet the atmosphere of calm was astounding.
