Mule Deer in Palo Duro Didn't have internet access last night so this one covers two days: Van Buren, AR to Palo Duro State Park south of Amarillo, TX and Amarillo to La Veta, CO. Bill told us about Palo Duro and suggested that we consider staying there if the time worked out. Well, the time worked out well, and the park is truely beautiful and the campground really nice - - well worth the short detour. Sat was a long day starting about 8:30 and not quitting until after 7:30 - - about 475 miles. It was cloudy the whole day and we encountered a little scattered rain. Saw deer and turkeys in the park sat evening.
Got up early Sunday to drive around the park and see the sights. Saw a bunch of turkeys and several deer. Several photos are included here. Drove up I-27 to Amarillo. It turned into city streets w/ lots of stop lights which were fortunately syncronized and we sailed through without having to stop. Stopped at Capulin Volcano Natl Monument - - very interesting and really great views from the top and on the road up. No guard rails, narrow, windy road, and VERY STEEP drop offs! Saw

Looking up at Canyon Wall in Palo Duro lots of Pronghorn Antelope along the road.
We could see the snow capped mountains from the top of the Volcano (it is in Capulin, NM)
Tomorrow we're going to go to Great Sand Dune Nat'l Park and Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. Will drive over Monarch Pass (11+K feet) to get the Gunnison NP.
