So the saddest day has finally arrived and we pack up and get ready to leave San Francisco and drive back to LA for the flight home tomorrow. We thank Eric for letting us use his apartment for a few days. Sad to be leaving the bed as it is so big and comfy! Hugh makes a note of the make as he wants to buy one! We cook off the rest of the vegetables we have left and eat the antichokes and put the asparagus in a bag with some butter to eat later. This turns out to be a great snack, but the butter has gone cold and hard again and is a bit too much!
We decide to drive the scenic route along the I-1, but it takes us forever to find it! In the meantime, we drive through San Fran which is nice. We get to see the bits where the tourists very rarely go, I love exploring in this way. The roof is down on the Mustang, the sun is out and shining and neither of us want to leave! We drive along lots of lovely beaches before the scenery changes into sheer
cliffs! We have to drive at no more than 40mph as the roads are so windy and corners are sharper than sharp! We drive for hours, but have to stop for loo breaks. The scenery changes into forest and we drive through the most beautiful red wood trees.
We stop at Big Sur, yes, that is actually the name of the town! And get burrito wraps as I am hungry! We decide to drive as far as we can before stopping for the night.
We drive passed Moora Rock which is literally a giant rock in the sea with nothing around it! The scenery has been fascinating as it changes so much with every mile you do.
Then we come across the Elephant Seal Rookery at Piedras Blancas! Thousands of seals on the beach, just chilling and hanging out! They have little newsletters so we read up about how they come ashore at this time of year to breed, give birth and shed their skins as they can't do that in the water. So, we are really lucky to see so many! They have gone from near extinction to a population
of around 150,000.
Get back in the car and keep driving, but it's getting dark now so we decide to drive to Santa Barbara and stop there. Can't see anymore lovely scenery! We drive to the middle and put hotels in sat nav and find a hotel quite near. Drive over, but they want $270 for one nights stay! It's 9.30 at night by now and the lovely receptionist suggests we use their wifi to find another and so I look on booking.com and find a motel on the edge of town which is only $80. The receptionist is lovely and offers us a glass of wine and a cookie and even offers to pop some popcorn for us! You can tell shes bored, but shes very chatty. She even rings the other motel to make sure they are still open! We drive over there and the receptionist there books us in, but explains she only has a double queen room. This means we have 2 giant queen beds, so we pick one each and fall into bed.
We drove for 9 hours today and we are still 2 hours away from
LA!
