Hey!
This weekend was spent going to, in, and traveling from Santa Cruz. Daniel and Stephanie both live in Santa Cruz and Jai went to UCSC and has lots of friends here, so we came up to visit. Jai drove (and we also gave two Japanese students he knew a ride up to San Francisco. We got In'N'Out on the way up - yum! We went to SF first and it was beautiful driving in over the Bay Bridge and seeing the city at night. It reminded me of when Warwick and I arrived in SF at night last May. We then arrived in Santa Cruz around 9pm and stayed up chatting and watching TV.
Saturday morning was spent sleeping in and then catching up on blogging, journaling, and emailing. Then a little bit of television.
Around 1pm we (Daniel, Mike and I) walked down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for the 28th Annual Clam Chowder Cook Off. For $8 we tried 5 different batches of clam chowder (although there were many more contestants). They had both Boston-style and Manhattan-style clam chowder - it was very cool. Very crowded, but very cool.
More relaxing and TV
followed. Around 7:15pm we headed off to Pink Godzilla sushi for dinner where I had REALLY good sushi and sake bombs (yum). It was so much fun and crowded, we had around 15 people there!!!
We were all experiencing "food comas", so we went back to Daniel's and watched more TV. A little beer (Anchor Steam Beer) and rum was drunk and we had a nice, relaxing time.
Sunday morning was more catch up time for me - trying to plan how to do tourist-y things in LA before I leave (which is soon). Tina, Zisko, Daniel and I headed to the Santa Cruz Diner for brunch - I tried a waffle (well, a bit of Daniel's) and had fries and eggs! This was followed by a chocolate thickshake that Zisko and I split from Marianne's. It was so good.
Back to Daniel's where we watched more TV and waited for Jai to get back from picking up the students from San Francisco. It was rather inclement weather, so I didn't really get to see much of Santa Cruz unfortunately. One day I'd love to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway and really take my time seeing
California, but I guess I just don't have enough time. The area in general reminded me of Lismore and the hinterland around that area.
On the way back, Jai took me and the two students to see the bay up close, which was beautiful. I could've stayed for hours, but we had to hit the road. The trip home was nice - particularly the mist-covered green hills and the beautiful lake we passed. I really like coming into LA when you can't quite see the city, but you can see a beautiful silhouette of the mountains highlighted by the soft orange glow of the city.
From Northern California,
Sarah
