But there was still a new and exciting city to discover before we could get all sloppy and sentimental about having to leave!
SF, I loved it already when I first discovered that they had croissants and normal bread!!
Who on earth said it never rained in California by the way???
First things first, of to prison! Our first sight: Alcatraz. What? 26 $ p.p.!! But believe me, it was worth every penny. We set off on a little boat into the very stormy SF Bay. It was windy and drizzly, so most passengers were downstairs looking a little green. We didn't mind the fresh air and had enough of being sick, so up on the deck it was. When you get there, if you get there, you can wonder around quite freely on the grounds. Of course some parts aren't safe to. Then there is an audio tour included inside the actual prison building. There also is much more history to find here, e.g. the Indian occupation and the fort which Alcatraz used to be. Also the island alone is quite unique and nice to see. We spent three good hours there, drinking hot tea and chocolate and walking around in the fresh sea breeze, getting the very last boat back just in time. But we had to laugh, again about American views. We thought this prison was meant to be horror for it's prisoners, the worlds most infamous prison! Escape proof, tough and violent! Hmmm, there seem to be worse running now a days though if you ask me. I mean, have these people ever been to an old prison in Europe? I guess not! Alcatraz was quite a nice place and modern for it's days. Okay, it was nearly impossible to escape and yes you could get stuck in a black hole for a very long time if you were naughty. But otherwise they had radios in the cells, were aloud instruments, had three very good meals a day, every few days a pack of cigarettes! Come on! 😊
It was late and getting dark, so once we had reached land again we headed straight to Fishermans Wharf. We passed Pier 39 and enjoyed the sea lions in the sunset plus a crepes! Yes! There was this real swell shop there too, with all these “star antiques”. Like a Rolling Stones Guitar. Just a shame we couldn't of even afforded an autograph picture, let alone Hendrix' hand signed guitar! At the Wharf we ate some fantastic crabs in season, enjoyed the bay by night and the hopped on one of the famous cable cars back to our warm bed.
