After leaving Anaheim and Disney behind (*sniff, sniff*), Jim and I headed up the Pacific Coast Highway. On the way up the highway, I got very car sick. The view from the road was beautiful, but it was so windy, my stomach just couldn't take it. At the height of the car-sickness, Jim decided to take a break from driving by stopping at the Point Lobos Game Reserve. We took a quick mile or so hike to see seals and sea lions. They were all sun bathing on the rocks that jut out of the ocean water. We brought our binoculars so that we could get a great view of them.
We also took a quick lunch stop at Montery, CA, as Jessica suggested, for some incredible clam chowder that reminded us of home. Boy, do we miss fried seafood this summer! There are no great seafood shacks here like in New England.
I was so excited when we got to San Jose and I saw Jess standing outside her condo. Dave and her have done such an excellent job decorating their home. It's just gorgeous, and it's wood floors and contemporary furnishings give it a homey, yet incredibly
classy look. Jim and I were both glad to be in a real home again. It's something we appreciate on our travels. That night Jess and Dave took us for Vietnamese food. It was the first of our new explorations with different ethnic foods during our San Fransisco trip. This was my favorite new treat. I loved the Vietnamese food. YUM!
Exhausted, the next day we slept in and got a late start. We had Dim Sum for lunch, which was like Chinese food in small plates, then walked around San Fransisco. We went to Pier 39 to see the sea lions that relocated there after the famous 1989 earthquake. It's funny to see such a large group of sea lions just chilling on the docks where the boats go. We got a YUMMY sundae from Ghirardelli. They made a mistake in the shop, so one of the waiters gave us a free sundae. It was a delicious mistake.
That night we went to dinner in North Beach. We went to a GREAT Italian spot called Tomaso's. I had the pizza, it was to die for. (*later on after we'd left Jessica's, Jim saw an article from a
food connoisseur who said that the ONLY place to get a pizza in all of San Fransisco was Tomaso's.. I think he was right) After dinner was my favorite part of the San Fransisco stop, Jazz at Pearls. It's a small place where you can get drinks and just relax at a table and listen to the artist. We saw Kim Nalli perform. Her voice is amazing and strikes a cord deep in your soul. Really outstanding.
The next day we slept in again, and then went to San Fransisco without Jess. Jim loved walking over the Golden Gate Bridge, it was enough for me to drive over it. Next, we drove over to Sausalito, which is a town very much like our Cohasset. We ate lunch and just relaxed by the shore at this quaint beach front deli, North Shore Coffee Company. We went into Tiburon to see the huge 17 million dollar houses! Lastly was dinner with Jess and Dave. It was tapas, Spanish food. Another yummy choice. We needed to get dressed up. Jess bought me a dress. It was a fun night.
On the last day of San Fransisco, we went on an Alcatraz
cruise. The cruise went under the Golden Gate and around the notorious prison Alcatraz. When we got off of the cruise, Jess, Jim and I went on a cable car ride. What fun! The cable car took us up and down some of the steep hills of San Fransisco. Jim stood on the steps on the front of the car, and held onto the bar instead of sitting down. What a fun experience for him! Cars come so close to the cable car-- it's definitely a great ride. After a dinner at Joe's Crab Shack, we were done for the night. We headed back to Jess and Dave's home for a final night's rest before heading out.
We had an excellent time in San Fransisco with Jessica and Dave. They were marvelous hosts. The food was excellent and they seemed to know just what to do to make us feel so welcome. I'm going to miss you both, and Pete and the cats. Thank you, thank you, thank you to you both!!
