Once Hamish and Antony had finished the morning sessions of the conference, we picked up the hired car. With our own set of wheels, we decided to have a look at La Jolla, a few miles north of Downtown San Diego. It is a bit of a Riviera of Southern California with a small population but a high proportion of wealthy people so property prices are sky high and it is full of upmarket shops and eateries. The whole place has a village feel to it and the seaside location makes it a popular day out destination.
The Ellen Browning Scripps Park is right by the ocean edge. The scenery is breath-taking. Just round the headland is La Jolla Cove, a favourite spot for scuba divers. On some rocks close to the shore were colonies of sea lions. Quite a surprise to see sea lions so close to a built-up area and fascinating to watch the way they just lumber over each other to get to the sunniest spots,
We had dinner at Berta's (sorry no food photos), a busy restaurant serving South American cuisine. While we waited for a table we took the opportunity to look around the Old
Town Historical Park, especially La Fiesta de Reyes. As the guidebook put it, a lively place with colourful shops and shop keepers and restaurant employees dressed in Mexican costumes. There are nightly entertainments - Mariachi Bands -but a little of that goes a loooong way.
