Their emphasis was on the history of the Buffalo Soldier and Indian Scouts at the Huachuca Post. We just spent 3 days at Kartchner Cavern State Park which is south east of Tucson - what a great area! The first day of exploration led us farther south to Huachuca (Wah-Chu-Ka) and a museum that was on the army base there. It was housed in two of the historic military housing buildings and was really well done. I would recommend it to anyone passing through. It showed a lot of the Buffalo Soldier and indian scout history at the post. Our next discovery was Carr Canyon which was also in Huachuca. We saw what looked like a water fall and headed for it. The dirt road we found took us well into the foothills to a small parking area and a gate across the road. There was a trail that went closer to the actual waterfall but we just went partway with Allie. There was an incredible view from up there - one that you wouldn't believe was actually desert. Our next step was to drive down 92 toward Naco and up to Bisbee. We stopped and made reservations for the Copper mining tour the next day and did a little exploring in the town. Yeehaw! Another cool find!
Waterfall
We saw this from a distance and drove to it up a dirt road, then hiked a ways up with Allie A really cute town with serious personality! I got tons of pictures of the area including a couple of beautiful churches, a courthouse, a very artisticly decorated "hippy pad" and a couple of upper elevation pics of the town. After that, we stopped in Tombstone just to check out the action. It was interesting seeing the town, but we weren't very interested in the shows that they put on, so after walking through and taking in what we were interested in, we decided to move on and not re-visit. We went on the Copper mine tour the next day which we would also highly recommend (minus the 3 year old). It was very informative and we enjoyed our guide. We were even able to get off our little train and walk through the mine to see other areas. On our way home we got stuck in traffic - That's right - TRAFFIC - in Huachuca. I was so glad to be back at the Cameo - I'm really getting spoiled! The following day, we were able to get tickets for one of the shows at the Kartchner Caverns. I have to say it was the most spectacular thing we have
Waterfall hike
We had just crossed a little stream that was coming down from the waterfall. She was happy to head back down! seen so far. It was really fantastic - They have gone to great lengths to preserve the natural state of the caverns, keeping it alive and continually growing and changing. They take you on a little train to the doorway of the caverns and explain that there is a concrete pathway with a handrail that is cleaned daily. If you touch the top of the wall of the concrete path, it will have to be marked and hand cleaned that night. They take you through airlock chambers to keep the air inside the caverns constant and pure, and mist you as you go through to keep the hair and lint down. You can't take cameras, bags, hats, sunglasses, have to spit out your gum and tie your rolled up coats around your waist. It's 70+ degrees with humidity at 90% taking it to about 82 degrees in the cavern. Their presentation was well done, informative and the show in the "thrown room" was just incredible. There is another presentation in "the big room" that we will do next time. It shows a different area of the caverns that is just as beautiful and informative as the rotunda. We really did
Underground
This is just a part of the copper mine that we toured in Bisbee enjoy this area of Arizona and will spend some more time here on the next trip. So, we are done with the south eastern Arizona and will be heading for the other side of the "mountains" for Tubac, Rio Rico, and Tucson. See you there!
