Day 5 dawned cold at around 0 degrees in Williams, Arizona. We were excited to see that our hotel was on Route 66 and after breakfast, we decided to have some photos taken by the famous road signs. Some of us were loving the nostalgia attached but others were unenthusiastic as they are probably a little young to appreciate the significance of the iconic route.
On route to Montezuma Castle, we visited the mountain town of Sedona which is set in Oak Canyon, another stunning example of the natural beauty in this part of the USA? Sedona is famous for it's natural energy vortexes and prides itself on being the reason the world didn't end at the strike of midnight on the year 2000. 6000 people held hands and channeled their energy which supposedly made the world continue to spin! Also, Sedona is a very wealthy town with many famous inhabitants (we didn't see any) and as a result was very expensive to buy things. One student was so shocked at the price of a sandwich ($14) that he came out the shop, found a teacher and said 'I'm not paying that! I'll buy that for a dollar!'
After
mooching in Sedona and buying lunch, we boarded the coach and set out for Montezuma Castle. We arrived 2 hours later and were amazed to see a large settlement built into the cliff face. There is a very interesting story behind it and no one knows what happened to the people who built it. There is no record at all after 1300 of their existence - it seemed the whole tribe disappeared from the face of the planet without trace. Students came up with imaginative reasons why, such as alien abduction!
Another conundrum was how the people got to the building in the cliff as it is set 100 foot above the ground. There were also lots of suggestions as to how they managed this. Very interesting day.
We are now in Phoenix which is a beautiful city and at a much lower altitude than all our other destinations. This was quite a relief as the high altitude (we have spent most of the past week at over twice the height of Ben Nevis!) was a little detrimental to our health. Most of us suffered head aches, nose bleeds and tight chests. Definitely worth it though!
We
had a lovely meal tonight at a buffet restaurant in Phoenix where they served candy floss as one of the desserts along with a huge chocolate fountain! We also discovered butter pecan ice cream!
This is our last night in the USA and we fly back tomorrow night (Saturday). This week has flown by and we're all sad it's coming to an end. We will try to update the blog tomorrow before we board the plane. If we don't manage it, thanks for following our incredible journey. The staff have worked hard and every student has been an absolute credit to both their families and The Bushey Academy. We have had the most amazing journey. See you soon!
