In 2007, I visited Cancun and Riviera Maya, so when I went back again this year, I was thrilled to see how much has changed. The airport, roads, highways and general infrastructure are much improved, yet, the culture and the kindness of the people is still just as warm and vibrant as I remember.
Arriving at the airport in Cancun can seem a little overwhelming, but if you simply remember after you have cleared immigration and customs to walk directly past the hordes of timeshare vendors as you are heading out to your transfers, you will be fine. They will tell you they can take you to the resort and that they are with the transfer company. Just keep walking…just keep walking…
The resort I stayed at for this trip was the Oasis Sens . (
http://www.starshiptravel.com/Cancun-Yucatan.htm) The reasons I chose to stay here, is because of the location, the design, and the fact that the resort is adults-only and gay friendly, which was of particular interest because of my LGBT clientele.
The staff worked hard maintaining the property, which is pretty much spotless, and the pools are clean, spacious with a beautiful view of the gorgeous white sand
beach. The VIP pool area is also very beautiful but not near the beach, and the Sensoria Spa has some very unique services and the venue is gorgeous.
Our room, which was a standard, lagoon view with a balcony was quite spacious and offered some magnificent sunsets! The rooms, with the exception of the bathrooms, are very stark white (white bedding, draperies, furniture and flooring) with colored mood lighting that you can adjust to your liking.
The entertainment at the resort was nice to have and varies every day and night. There’s enough activities going on to keep you as busy as you’d like to be but it is not “in your face” if you just want to be left alone. There is an early evening show in the lobby on some nights that is acrobatic and sensual. And there’s also some fun entertainment on some nights in the nightclub.
The food was mostly okay, but what really stands out to me was the guacamole at the Muerdeme Mucho was the best guacamole I have ever had in my life, and the margaritas were great. Also the dinner we had at Al Sur was a lot of
fun.
While in Cancun, one must explore! The busses couldn’t be easier or more affordable at just $1 USD per ride. They run back and forth 24 hours a day taking you anywhere and everywhere along the hotel zone and into the city itself if you choose. The hotel zone is a long strip of land in the shape of the number 7 that is lined on both sides with hotels, condos, resorts, restaurants, bars, shops, upscale malls, local market huts, liquor and cigar stores, and sports shops. In the center of the 7 is a beautiful lagoon where lots of people fish and waterski. One night we ventured out to an incredible restaurant called Harry’s where the view was fantastic and the food was divine. The filet mignon just melted in my mouth. And one afternoon we ventured into the flea market area where we had fun haggling with the locals for the goods they sell. Sometimes they were pretty pushy and other times downright funny, like the one guy who told us to come into his shop so we could see everything we don’t need. We also stopped at an open-air restaurant along the way for authentic
Mexican food and a cold Corona.
On our second day in Cancun, we had a very special treat and that was to spend the day on Isla Mujeres at Dolphin Discovery (
www.dolphindiscovery.com) where we experienced a wonderful day swimming and playing with dolphins. It was an amazing experience that I wish I could do all the time.
Our last day was spent at Club Med Cancun Yucatan (
http://www.starshiptravel.com/Cancun-Yucatan.htm), where we did a site inspection, and then spent the day enjoying the beautiful property and all that Club Med has to offer including its powdery white beach. The water here was a little calmer than where we were staying. Much to my surprise the buffet lunch we enjoyed at Club Med was fresh and delicious with many different food stations for every taste possible. The property is huge and rooms were well appointed. There’s just so much to do there, we didn’t know what to do first. Activities abound! Hopefully I will get a chance to stay there for more than just a day.
